Australian Research Council Future Fellowships at the University of Newcastle

The Unviersity of Newcastle is seeking Expressions of Interest from outstanding researchers who wish to apply for an Australian Research Council Future Fellowship to be based at the University of Newcastle in 2009. The ARC Future Fellowships offer four-year Fellowships of up to $140,000 a year to the best and brightest Australian and international researchers in the middle of their career. The Future Fellowships scheme encourages proposals from researchers working in areas of national priority, with preference given to those researchers who can demonstrate a capacity to build collaboration across industry, research institutions or with other discipliens.  Further information is available through the ARC website at http://www.arc.gov.au/ncgp/futurefel/future_default.htm

The University of Newcastle is recognised nationally and internationally for research excellence in key areas. Mid-career researchers working in areas related to our areas of research excellence in Centres and Institutes are particularly encouraged to apply. Researchers who are successful n winning ARC Future Fellowship based at the University of Newcastle will be awarded the following benefits in addition to the ARC Future Fellowship entitlements:

External applicants:

  1. A guaranteed teaching and research contract appointment of two years immediately following the Fellowship, with the possibility of a continuing appointment thereafter subject to performance and availability of funding.
  2. Generous relocation support.
  3. Start up funding and annual research support as well as access to the University’s internal research support schemes. The level of start up funding will be field dependent and will be determined on a case-by-case basis. Prospective applicants are urged to discuss their needs with the relevant Centre Directors, Head of School or Faculty Pro Vice Chancellor before completing the application.

Internal applicants:

  1. Successful internal applicants on operationally funded contracts of 5 years or more or on-going appointees will be backfilled at the same level and time fraction as their current appointment for the full period of the Fellowship. In some cases it may be possible to backfill for a period of five years. If the successful internal applicant is on a fixed term externally funded research appointment the University will ensure that obligations under the terms of the agreement with the sponsoring organisation are met.
  2. Start up funding and annual research support, as well as access to the University’s internal research support schemes. The level of start up funding will be field dependent and will be determined on a case-by-case basis. Prospective applicants are urged to discuss their needs with the relevant Centre Directors, Head of School or Faculty Pro Vice Chancellor before completing the application.
