Excellence in Research for Australia 2012

What is ERA?

The Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) 2012 assessment is conducted by the Australian Government to measure the research performance of Australia’s higher education institutions from 2005 to 2010.

Research is grouped into 22 broad categories ('two-digit' fields) and 157 more detailed categories ('four-digit' fields) and then rated between 1 and 5:

  1. 'well below world standard'
  2. 'below world standard'
  3. 'at world standard'
  4. 'above world standard'
  5. 'well above world standard'

In 2012, the University of Newcastle has achieved three '5' ratings in two-digit fields (0 in ERA 2010), and 18 '5' ratings in four-digit fields (seven in ERA 2010).

Newcastle's performance in 2012

An independent Australian Government assessment of research excellence has placed the University of Newcastle equal 7th for research that is 'well above world standard'.

Under the 2012 Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) assessment 90 per cent of research at Newcastle is rated world standard and above.
