Research Centre for Gender and Health

The Research Centre for Gender and Health conducts multidisciplinary research on all aspects of gender-related health and health care. The main focus of the Centre's work is the Australian Longitudinal Study of Women's Health (Women's Health Australia), a large-scale multidisciplinary survey of 40,000 Australian women in three age cohorts, which is funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing. This is the largest longitudinal survey ever conducted in Australia and has attracted funding of $8 million so far. The Centre has its own academic and general staff and supervises research postgraduate students from a variety of disciplinary backgrounds, as well as working collaboratively with academics from several Schools within the University and from other Universities across Australia. Research issues which have received particular attention include health, behaviour and well-being among women at various life stages; menopause; motherhood; family caregiving; domestic violence; access and satisfaction with health care in urban and rural areas; and social aspects of men's health.
