The Employment Studies Centre (ESC) provides a focus for research and consultancy on workplace, industry and labour market issues at The University of Newcastle. The Centre also contributes to public policy analysis in areas such as unemployment, skills formation, wage bargaining, gender equity, organisational change and regional development. While the Centre is housed in the Faculty of Business & Law, research is conducted by around 25 research associates in multidisciplinary teams across several faculties and schools. This work is funded by national competitive grants and contracts with a range of public and private sector organisations. Recent studies cover employment patterns, case studies of high performance workplaces, major national and regional surveys of skills and training and skill formation at the industrial, regional and national level. The Centre is also a Division of TUNRA, the University's commercial arm. Since it was founded in the early 1990s, the ESC has attracted funding of over $1 million and established a leading reputation in both academic and contract research.
