This is a transdisciplinary group of more than twenty population health and health service researchers and educators, who are part of the School of Medical Practice and Population Health, Faculty of Health. Staff from the disciplines of epidemiology, biostatistics, health social science, health economics, pharmaco-epidemiology, quality improvement and health promotion work together on teaching and research programs. The Centre's mission is to improve public health by teaching research skills to clinicians and public health workers to tackle important population health problems. More than 350 postgraduate students are enrolled in a range of award courses. Local, distance and overseas research students are supported by a range of national and international agencies. The Centre is also supported by a major grant provided through the Commonwealth of Australia's Public Health Education and Research Program (PHERP) aimed at strengthening the nation's public health practice and research workforce. A recent pioneering initiative is the Centre's development of one of the world's first master's specialisations in genetic and molecular epidemiology.
