The Research at the CRC for Coal in Sustainable Development is underpinned by a focus on the three dimensions of sustainability - economic, social and environmental. Research is conducted in six research programs; Economic social and environmental assessment, Current power generation, Transitional power generation, Future scenarios and technologies, Ironmaking, and By-products and waste.
Coal plays a prominent role in national and international energy supply. There are increased pressures for sustainable development. This must take into account future as well as present needs as Australia makes more efficient use of its non-renewable resources. The transition from a fossil fuel dependant world to one that makes balanced use of alternative energy requires a full assessment of the options, impacts, probability and extent of this change. This can only be achieved with high quality research.
CCSD brings together the majority of Australia's coal research skill base as well as experts in sustainability. CCSD researchers are recognised internationally as being at the forefront of coal research in the international science community.
