Newcastle FACS was established in 1995 by a committee of research scientists from the University of Newcastle and the Hunter Area Health Service (HAHS) with the acquisition of a FACScan cytometer for joint research purposes.

The BRF then purchased a Becton Dickinson Fluorescent Activated Cell Sorter (FACS) Vantage in April 1997 for educational and research purposes, and to service the requirements of industry in the Hunter Valley.  The Vantage sorter was decommissioned in 2008 and replaced with a 9 colour analysis FACS aria cell sorter.  A FACSCalibur machine was purchased in 1999 to complement the existing machines.  Most recently a FACSCanto Flow Cytometer was purchased to replace the FACScan to offer 6-colour analysis.
Newcastle FACS can provide a comprehensive Cell Cytometry service to the researchers of the Hunter Valley, offering cell characterisation and multiple parameter cell and particle sorting.

It is the objective of Newcastle FACS to aid in the development of industry and research applications.
