In 1997 the University of Newcastle together with In 1997 the University of Newcastle together with Australian Research Council (ARC) and Pacific Power established the Advanced Mass Spectrometry Unit (AMSU). The Unit is managed and operated by the Research and International Division of the University of Newcastle, providing multi-disciplinary research support in mass spectrometry. The AMSU is located in the Life Sciences Building on the Callaghan Campus of the University.
The Facility includes:
The AMSU provides access to mass spectral analysis for academic researchers, industry, local research organizations and medical laboratories.
There are over twenty Research Associates attached to the AMSU in order to provide expertise in a wide range of analytical services. The coverage includes such areas as plant sciences, biochemistry, biomedical sciences, biotechnology, chemistry (analytical, inorganic, organic and physical), clinical pharmacology, colloidal and polymeric sciences, environmental sciences, food technology, marine sciences, material sciences and sports medicine.
The primary function of the AMSU is to provide molecular, biological, pharmaceutical and material identification. The AMSU is able to oversee such diverse projects as detecting organic/metal contaminants in waste-waters to measuring the level of pesticides and herbicides in milk products.
