A man with a sound vision

It all started at the age of 16 when his mother won a red plastic guitar and a rubber plant in a raffle – a pivotal moment in a young man’s life. Would he take the guitar and become a rock star or take the plant and become a botanist? Luckily for us Richard Vella chose the guitar.

Richard didn’t actually go on to be a rock star. After teaching himself the guitar, he played in bands and went on to become a highly regarded musician, renowned composer and author. He loves everything from 13th century medieval music to hip-hop. He devours books on philosophy and is a maestro in the kitchen. Richard Vella is versatile and accomplished.

As the new Professor of Music at the University’s Conservatorium, his vision is to create career-ready musicians. "The music industry today demands not only traditional performance skills but also diverse musical experiences and a professional repertoire of both musical styles and business know-how."

But how do you create such a musician?

"It’s all about diversity and being creative. We need to preserve traditions and cultivate innovation. We need to prepare our students and ensure they have the necessary skills to achieve a sustainable career in an industry that is radically changing."

He may not be a "star" but Richard Vella’s vision is brilliant.
