Welcome to the Best Practice Ecological Rehabilitation of Mined Lands Conference Information Site.

Our third annual conference in Singleton in the heart of the mining intends once again to explore the best in the science, practice and practise of mined land restoration to achieve the best in biodiversity outcome.

The first major focus is to look at current and emerging best practice approaches to mine rehabilitation activities via case studies along with their achievements and lessons.

The second major focus will be discussing and identifying measures for assessing post mining rehabilitation activity outcomes and their contribution towards biodiversity.

This is far more complex than the spreading and treatment of spoils and we seek your participation by submitting an abstract of your work in any of the following areas:

Ecological restoration and rehabilitation science, research and or best practice
Case studies along with achievements and lessons
The regulatory environment now and the future
Biodiversity assessment

The Tom Farrell Institute for the Environment at the University of Newcastle is once again partnered in this Conference by the Biodiversity Assessment and Conservation section of the Office of Environment and Heritage, and also by the NSW Minerals Council and the Division of Resources and Energy of NSW Trade & Investment.

Biomass 2013 Conference

In Singleton on the 11th of September 2013 we will run our first conference on the emerging supply, use and processing of biomass for fuels, soils, advanced materials and carbon sequestration. We wish to draw together those experts in research, in industry, or in government working in this area to present their work to highlight the capacity of biomass – examples might include new biomass resource crops such as industrial hemp, biochar or biofuels projects.

We are seeking speakers for this exciting event and invite you to submit an abstract outlining your work in:

Biomass feedstock development from waste and residues
New crops or land management practices for biomass production
Biomass processing technologies for lignocellulosic biofuels and bioenergy
Biomass processing for advanced biomaterials
Sustainable soils – soil carbon, biochar, active soils and soil carbon sequestration

The Biomass 2013 conference will be followed the next day at the same venue by the third annual "Best Practice Ecological Rehabilitation of Mined Lands 2013 Conference". Your participation in that event would also be welcomed.
