Associate Professor Shen Chen

Associate Professor Shen ChenDr Chen is a senior lecturer in School of Education at the University of Newcastle. He received his first degree in Nanjing Normal University, one of the leading teacher-training universities in China. He undertook a PhD in Language Education at La Trobe University. His experience of learning and research training in two cultures promoted his interest in the study of cross-cultural communication in academic settings.

Dr Chen has taken a proactive role in establishing cooperative relations with Universities in China, and has been actively involved in exchange programs with universities in other Asian countries. He is also playing a role in negotiating offshore programs in China. Dr Chen has successfully supervised many overseas students, mainly with Asian backgrounds. He has a special interest in the differences that exist in learning cultures in Asian and Western countries and has written widely on cross-cultural teaching and learning.

Dr Chen has published in such journals as Language Teaching and Linguistic Studies and the Australian Review of Applied Linguistics. In 1998, Dr Chen received the University Award for Excellence in Teaching for linking his research closely with teaching and learning in the inter-cultural context.
