Associate Professor Neil Morpeth
Dr Morpeth's research interests can be characterised by the descriptor: The history of ideas. His current research focus is Marc Bloch and Jack Lindsay both of whom recognized the primacy of education and the growth of knowledge and ideas in the makings of ancient and modern societies. Moreover, these writers additionally explored the 'dual nature' (or double-edged sword) of contemporary educational ideals when they are linked or harnessed to state power and/or ideological belief systems.
The rise of institutional forms of education and professional training require historians of ideas to focus upon the dynamics of individuals and groups and their shaping (deliberate, opportune, and accidental) of contemporaneous belief systems and societies.
