Borrowing and Returning

On Campus and Off Campus students from the Renwick Centre may borrow material direct from the Renwick Centre Library. If you are an Off Campus student and live within easy driving distance of the Library, its preferable that you visit rather than use the postal method of borrowing items. Students who live within the Newcastle or Central Coast areas may also borrow from the other University of Newcastle campus libraries.

Although you are able to borrow from other campus libraries you will find that the Renwick Centre Library is customised to your subject areas, so please attempt to borrow primarily from this collection.

All students may borrow 10 items including:

  • Books, videos, kits (some restrictions do apply)

There is a loan period of 4 weeks unless recalled via the Studentmail email system. Some items are only 3 day loans.

Journals may not be borrowed, only articles photocopied.

Special Reserve/Short Loans are available to On Campus students for 2 hours in-library use or overnight or weekend use. Off Campus students do not have access to these items, but may request copies of the contents to identify chapters to be photocopied on their behalf. Tip: There are often extra copies of popular items, please check the catalogue.

Requesting Loans - Off Campus Students

For Off Campus or Distance Education students the cost of postage is shared equally between the University and the student. The Library pays when it sends the material to you. Students pay for the postage to return the material. International students must post material by Airmail. (On Campus students are not eligible for this service).

Use NEWCAT to reserve (or request or hold) an item. Please visit the Reserving and Renewing section of Renwick Centre Library's home page for how to do this or check out the NEWCAT Tutorials that contain instructions on how to effectively search the catalogue.

If you are having difficulties initiating a loan via NEWCAT, please contact the Renwick Centre Library:

Please remember to include all bibliographic details of the items being requested, including call number or location, to avoid delays in processing.

Checking Your Loans

Use My Library option on the top menu of the online catalogue, NEWCAT. You may also renew your loans from this area.

Fines are imposed by other campus libraries on borrowed items. Renwick Centre Library does not fine, but you are immediately restricted from borrowing other items once an item is overdue.

Returning Loans

Loans must be returned by the due date by:

  • Placing items in the returns chute (available during library hours only)

  • Mailing items in padded envelopes which have been well secured by stapling and taping to:

Renwick Centre Library
Private Bag 29
Parramatta NSW 2124

Students are responsible for the safe return of borrowed items. If items are lost in the postal system, the student will be required to pay for their replacement in the Library collection.

Using Other Libraries

Please review the University Library Australia for reciprocal borrowing agreements with some NSW University and TAFE Libraries. Staff and students may register as borrowers at libraries of other participating institutions. There is an annual fee for registration.
