About the NSW Institute for Frontier Geoscience
The NSW Institute for Frontier Geoscience (NSW IFG) is a partnership of the University of Newcastle with the NSW Department of Trade and Investment, Regional Infrastructure and Services and Doyles Creek Mining and is focused on research and teaching in Earth Sciences. The Institute leverages the strengths of the University in minerals processing and exploration, carbon capture & storage, geology and geochemistry. It will provide teaching, leadership, and research facilities to contribute to the sustainability and viability of the minerals and mining sectors in NSW.
In conjunction with the Discipline of Earth Sciences, the NSW IFG will help provide graduates with vital knowledge and skills through industry support for study, work placement, on the job training and access to the most up to date technology and expertise in preparation for a career in the resources sector. Greater access to work placement and graduate work opportunities is available through the Work Integrated Learning Program and industry specific Post Graduate Training Courses.
The NSW Institute for Frontier Geoscience aims to address the critical skills shortages within the coal industry by providing the sector with highly trained and skilled graduates. The Institute also aims to provide "industry-standard benchmarking of coal geologist skills through the series of available postgraduate courses". These courses are designed by the industry for the industry.
The association of partners within the NSW Institute for Frontier Geoscience will also benefit future collaborations with other research bodies at the University, such as the Newcastle Institute of Energy Resources (NIER), the Priority Research Centre for Geotechnical and Materials Modelling, the Priority Research Centre for Energy, and the Environmental and Climate Change Research Group (ECCRG) in areas such as groundwater, energy and minesite remediation.
Funding for the Institute will be shared between the NSW Department of Trade and Investment, Regional Infrastructure and Services, Doyles Creek Mining P/L, and the University of Newcastle.
The NSW Institute for Frontier Geoscience is located within the School of Environmental and Life Sciences and builds on a Memorandum of Understanding between the University and the NSW Department of Trade and Investment.
