DRUMBEAT is an evidence-based therapeutic intervention program using music, presented by the Family Action Centre in conjunction with the Holyoake Institute, WA. The program is made up of five key components: drum songs to promote collaboration and increased levels of focus and commitment; drum games with analogies that support engagement and teamwork; discussions linked to healthy relationships that encourage personal reflection; improvisation that supports creative approaches to new challenges and a performance that provides recognition of achievement and a link to community. Approximately 50% of the training is drum instruction. Participants do not need prior musical knowledge.
DRUMBEAT is currently being delivered by over 500 schools and organisations working with 'at risk' individuals across Australia and New Zealand. It is used to support both young and old in primary and secondary schools, youth centres, drug and alcohol rehabilitation facilities, prisons, migrant trauma centres, mental health services, children's hospitals and child protection services. The DRUMBEAT program is highly adaptable and designed specifically to reach those population groups hardest to engage.

DRUMBEAT develops persistence, patience and commitment. Evaluations of the program have shown that young people are more willing and able to engage in mainstream group activities upon completing the program: they have improved emotional regulation, feel more confident, less anxious and have a greater sense of belonging. These changes have been maintained for participants 12 months after completing the program.
The Family Action Centre convenes workshops on behalf of Holyoake, WA in Queensland, New South Wales, South Australia, Australian Capital Territory and Victoria. For details on training in other states please contact Holyoake, WA direct on +61 8 9416 4444 or visit their Website: www.holyoake.org.au
