Graduate Certificate and Master in Family Studies

Our innovative online Graduate Certificate and Master Program in Family Studies combine core and directed courses relevant to a range of professions working with families with four areas of specialisation: Family Dispute Resolution, Relationship Counselling, Working With Men and Fathers, and International Family Studies.

The Graduate Certificate (Grad, Cert. FAMS) and Master programs (M. FAMS) are the first in Australia to cater to the needs of people transitioning from a generalist qualification into professional roles, those already working as practitioners and/or managers in family services, or those looking to build careers in policy or practice in the field of Family Studies.

The M. FAMS provides students with comprehensive multi-disciplinary knowledge and skills to undertake policy development and service delivery directed towards strengthening families. Students benefit from the expertise of academic staff from the Family Action Centre, Interrelate, and International Universities with highly regarded reputations in the field of Family Studies, including the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, Nebraska, USA, and Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, India. Through these partnerships, students have opportunities to undertake a tailored program of study with acclaimed national and international leaders in the academic and practice fields.

Graduate Certificate and Masters in Educational Studies (Boys' Education or Engaging Families and Communities)

The Family Action Centre offers both online Graduate Certificate and Master courses specialising in either educating boys or engaging families and communities, as part of the Master of Educational Studies. These specialisations are the first in Australia for practising teachers who wish to develop their professional expertise in educating boys in various settings: primary, secondary, single-sex or co-educational schools. Students can also combine courses in both these specialisations with other courses in the Master program.

The programs are available on line through Gradschool and the School of Education at the University of Newcastle, and are delivered by the staff of the Family Action Centre. This means you can upgrade you skills and specialise in educating boys or engaging families and communities, no matter where you teach.

The practical design of these courses means that you will make positive changes for boys and families in your schools as you progress through the program. Please follow the links below for further details on programs and enrolment details.
