Frequently Asked Questions

If you're thinking about volunteering, you probably have a million questions you want to ask. Here are some of the most commonly asked questions, and their answers:

How is a volunteer linked with a family?
The coordinator carefully considers the needs of the family and the skills and experience of the volunteer in order for a successful relationship to develop. The coordinator may also identify a common interest as a way for the family and volunteer to connect.

What happens if the volunteer gets attached to the family?
Throughout the preparation course, discussions are held in relation to setting boundaries and beginnings and endings. This helps the volunteer to know when it is time to cease visiting the family as a Home-Start visitor.

What happens if the volunteer and family do not get along?
The coordinator will visit the family and volunteer independently to determine if there is a way to assist in the maintenance of the relationship. If the issue cannot be resolved, then a new volunteer will be introduced to the family.

How much does the preparation course cost?
The course is FREE for volunteers.

Is there any reimbursements of costs?
Home-Start makes a contribution towards the cost of a volunteer's travel between their home and the Home-Start family's home.
