Dr. Lars Thomsen
Dr Lars Thomsen is an early career researcher who was awarded his PhD degree in physics in December 2004 at the University of Newcastle, Australia. Dr Thomsen's research interest ranges from studies of organosilane adsorption on metal surfaces to the fabrication of a carbon nanotubes for a field ionisation helium atom detector. He has also developed a keen interest in synchrotron research and has conducted experiments at a number of international synchrotrons including the Photon Factory in Japan, PAL in Korea, ASTRID in Denmark, NSRRC in Taiwan and ALS in USA.
As a senior member in the Nanomaterials and Devices Group at the University of Newcastle, Dr Thomsen is responsible for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the groups PHI-550 ESCA/Auger system, as well as being the principal driving force behind major system upgrades. He has demonstrated expertise in a wide range of surface analytical techniques including Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), near-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (NEXAFS), scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and is frequently commissioned to investigate projects with the PHI-550 UHV surface analysis system for various researchers within the University of Newcastle as well as for industrial applications.
