Took up position as the Professor of Medicine and Clinical Toxicology at the University of Newcastle, Australia in November 2006. She heads clinical and research strategy in toxicology, and teaches medicine at the University. Prior to this she had 8 years experience at the National Poisons Information Service (London) providing 24/7 Consultant level advice in poisoning/ chemical incidents and actively managing poisoned patients on behalf of the largest poisons centre world-wide. She spent in addition to this role three years as Deputy Director of the Chemical Incident Response service at that centre and three years experience as the overall Director of the National Poisons Information Service centre (89 toxicology staff including chemical incident response, 24/7 poisons advice centre, analytical toxicology laboratory and veterinary poisoning advice service) and three years as the Head of Medicine at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital. Professor Jones, has also previously as Director of the London centre, has provided confidential Professional advice to competent authorities such as Government departments on toxicology issues at an expert level. She has provided risk assessment, risk communication and active advice in the management of chemical incidents and terrorist events, such as active involvement as the duty Consultant toxicologist at the London centre on the day of the 7/7 London bombings in 2005.

Since arriving in Australia Professor Jones has worked as an independent toxicologist to help with the health surveillance strategy and risk communication around lead pollution in Esperance WA, has been the toxicology advisor to NSW Health, to FSANZ and has provided clinical toxicology advice to the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing on a number of matters. She is an active clinician, actively involved in the management of poisoned and general medical patients at the Calvary mater hospital in Newcastle, and thus brings active clinical expertise to toxicology work. She frequently presents in International toxicology meetings, predominantly in the USA. Her active research interests are in clinical toxicology (including antidotes) , pharmacology, risk assessment and risk communication. She has also undertaken work on behalf of WHO International Programme on Chemical Safety and the EU on chemical incident/ monitoring/ toxicosurveillance.
