If we applied all that we already know about cancer, that is if we were all ‘cancer smart’ – didn’t smoke, ate a healthy diet, protected ourselves from the sun and had regular checkups – we could reduce the number of cancer deaths in NSW by half.
The Centre for Health Research & Psycho-oncology (CHeRP) is a behavioural research group established in 1988 with funding from the Cancer Council NSW and is based within the Faculty of Health, University of Newcastle.
CHeRP’s mission is to undertake the highest quality research and relevant training in order to contribute to a reduction in the burden of illness imposed by cancer. Our research focus is on:
- primary and secondary prevention of cancer
- behavioural aspects of the consequences of cancer
- the care of cancer patients
Track RecordCHeRP has a proven track record of undertaking behavioural research of the highest quality, reflected by the 273 publications in refereed journals; 6 book chapters; 3,152 citations of CHeRP research in peer-reviewed journal articles; over $15.5765 million of external funding, in addition to the $12.33 million of Cancer Council and University of Newcastle core funding; 27 postgraduate students trained (23 PhD and 4 Masters); and representation on prestigious and strategic local, state, national and international committees and working groups between 1988 and 2009. |

Dr. Sylvie Lambert Joins CHeRP
We are pleased to announce the addition of Dr. Sylvie Lambert to our team at CHeRP. Sylvie arrived from Canada in February 2009 to start a two year HMRI post-doctoral research fellowship. Dr. Lambert is currently working on a longitudinal partners and caregivers well-being study, the Supportive Care Needs survey for partners and caregivers, and a consumer toolkit for patients with advanced cancer and their families.
Prof. Afaf Girgis Celebrates 20 Years of Service to Cancer Control
Professor Afaf Girgis has given much time and energy to CHeRP over 20 years. Her research interests have furthered numerous fields of cancer studies. When Prof. Girgis started on her cancer research journey, she was firstly interested in skin cancer prevention and early detection.
Dr Billie Bonevski joins CHeRP
Joining the CHeRP team February 2008, Billie Bonevski brings with her a wealth of public health research experience.
Dr Claire Johnson awarded her PhD for Palliative Care Research
CHeRP researcher Claire Johnson was awarded her PhD in 2007 for researching practices relating to the referral of patients with advanced cancer to specialist palliative care services. Her thesis is titled ‘Palliative care in Australia: Perceptions and practices of cancer specialists and general practitioners’.
