Assessment of serum zinc status in women during early pregnancy and dietary factors associated with low zinc status

Dr Michael J Dibley and Dr Andrew Bisits (John Hunter Hospital)

Zinc deficiency has been related to a number of adverse perinatal outcomes including low birth weight, preterm delivery and poor parturition. This cross sectional study aims to determine the prevalence of poor zinc status in early pregnancy in women in a population of pregnant women attending antenatal care at the John Hunter Hospital. Measurements include serum and urinary zinc levels and food frequency assessment of zinc intake using validated questionnaire. This study will allow us to assess the feasibility of a trial of zinc supplementation in pregnancy in the Hunter region and will provide new information about the use of urinary zinc in the assessment of zinc status in pregnant women.
