Impact of alternative funding methods on the efficiency and equity of hospital care in Australia

Associate Professor Robert Gibberd, Tracey Zander and S. Peacock (Monash University)

The introduction of case-mix funding systems by some States and the use of population based funding in NSW creates an opportunity to determine the impact of these funding systems on the resulting efficiency and equity of the acute care hospital system. Ten years of Australian data will be analysed to determine whether either funding systems can improve the regional equity and allocation of health care resources or the efficiency of the hospitals. This is a two-year NHMRC strategic reserve fund grant that will be completed in 2003.
