Postgraduate Coursework

In almost every area of professional employment today, it is beneficial to increase your skills and competencies, and wise to update your professional qualifications. As careers develop, health professionals are increasingly called on to contribute to decision-making processes (often within a multi-disciplinary framework), manage projects and budgets, ensure cost effectiveness, analyse and manage data, and maintain high quality standards.

We would encourage health care professionals from a range of public health settings to enrol in graduate programs, whether they are striving to advance their knowledge and skills, or enhance and develop their career prospects.

The Centre for Clinical Epidemiology and Biostatistics, as part of the School of Medicine and Public Health, offers postgraduate programs leading to awards in public health related programs in the Faculty of Health. These programs provide a foundation of knowledge and the essential tools for public health research and practice in order to:

  • Identify and plan for the health needs of the community;
  • Identify social, behavioural and environmental factors affecting health and illness;
  • Develop effective and efficient approaches to health promotion and health care; and
  • Evaluate health services

Objectives of the Public Health Programs

The programs are based around core courses that develop the skills for the judicious use of research evidence in clinical practice (evidence-based medicine), health service delivery and public health policy. These core courses include epidemiology and biostatistics as well as economics and health social science. Each program also includes specialty courses appropriate to the program. While each course provides certain specific skills, a transdisciplinary approach to learning is applied across courses such that a repertoire of research skills is developed. Designing a research protocol and a minor research thesis (at the Masters level) provides opportunities for the skills acquired to be integrated and applied to a significant public health research question.

As a graduate, you will be a health service practitioner who has developed a strong capacity for collecting and reviewing evidence to inform clinical practice and health service delivery, and allow rational and evidence-based decision making to achieve improved health outcomes for individuals, improved health at a population level, and more efficient use of community resources. In the clinical context this is aimed at ensuring that:

  • only treatment or prevention regimens that work are used;
  • useful (effective) care and prevention are provided efficiently; and
  • a rational approach to the allocation of resources in relation to the health needs of the population is employed
