About the cluster
Home to some of the country's leading researchers, our University has become a key player in the development of innovative defence research. It is through the outstanding leadership of our research experts that we continue to work towards establishing some of Australia's largest collaborative defence research projects.
Our defence research capabilities are of the highest standard and involve research disciplines rated at the highest level through Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) ratings of 5, indicating 'well above world class', for Applied Mathematics, Civil Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Macromolecular and Materials Chemistry, Psychology and Cognitive Science, Neurosciences, Human Movement and Sports Science and Cardiovascular Medicine and Haematology
Cluster Aims
The University of Newcastle Defence Research Cluster aims to encourage greater engagement between University of Newcastle researchers and the established defence industry in the Newcastle and the Hunter Region which includes both government and industry stakeholders.
Through the development of a framework for collaboration, the Cluster aims to create an environment where new opportunities for innovative solutions and research breakthroughs can be generated and translated into practise for the benefit of the defence sector and its personnel.
Hunter Defence
The University of Newcastle is a member of Hunter Defence, through the Hunter Business Chamber and Hunternet. This group works alongside industry and government to build defence related capacity in the Hunter region.
