Communication and Media Research
Many of the professions linked to communication and media are in a state of flux globally. We are facing a period of sustained digital change that is already providing fertile ground for research opportunities. Our researchers work in the School of Design, Communication and Information Technology.
The Communication and Media Research (CAMR) group has been established to carry out research in the following areas:
- Digital media
- Strategic communication
- Creativity and cultural production
- Copyright, cultural and creative industries
- Journalism (print, broadcast and online)
- Media production (TV, radio, sound and online)
- International media studies
- Media ethics
- Communication and discourse
A number of our members are former media professionals who are positioned to link their research with established and emerging communication and media industries.
Some of the current research being carried out is detailed below.
Creativity and Cultural Production in the Hunter: An applied Ethnographic Study of Entrepreneurial Systems in the Creative Industries
This project is being funded by a prestigious Australian Research Council (ARC) Linkage grant. Members of the CAMR group are carrying out an ethnographic study of all the major creative industries in the Hunter region in conjunction with industry partners.
The aim is to provide detailed insights into the dynamic creative systems at the heart of these industries. It will give policy makers, industry and academia an increased understanding of the factors affecting creative output in an increasingly digitally linked world.
Digital Public Space
The CAMR research group has also begun work on the Digital Public Space project under the endorsement of Professor Mark Balnaves. This project is a concept proposed by Tony Ageh from the BBC in the UK and has input from the Qatar National Library.
This investigation relies on an appropriately managed environment to facilitate discovery, retrieval, consumption, critique, correction, augmentation and creative endeavour.
Research in this area could range from an investigation of the preservation of democratic media processes to an examintation of the creative potential embedded in legal access to digital content of this type. The research possibilites are multiple and diverse.
Other international areas
Our researchers are active on other international arenas such as:
- Indian cinema- the Bollywood Project is utilising the CAMR group's significant strength in Indian cinema to establish this project in conjunction with the Australia India Council. The group will leverage off existing contacts within sections of the Indian film industry and draw on the experience of members within CAMR.
- Digital piracy - this issue has an impact on the rights of a creator and appears to be diminishing incomes. One project being developed by the CAMR group is aimed at investigating musical creators' reactions to piracy and the use of digital media that facilitate it. It will be developed in conjunction with Professor Keith Negus from Goldsmiths College in London, the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA) and Music Rights Australia (MRA).
The CAMR group has viable research contacts at the ABC, Fairfax Media and APRA/AMCOS and has been actively establishing networks of industry partners.
The CAMR group also has a strong and active postgraduate cohort with Masters and PhD students affiliated with the group. The group supports its members in conference attendance and brings visiting scholars to the School to conduct seminars, run symposia and seek further international research links.
CAMR sustains its activities through internal and external grant application on the basis of a strong publishing record, both nationally and internationally. The group engages in contract and collaborative research with organisations internal and external to the University.
CAMR publications already range from books to book chapters, journal articles, refereed conference proceedings and major and minor creative works such as documentaries, websites and recordings.
The CAMR group is beginning to establish itself through publication activity across radio, print and web-based outlets.
