Advanced Chemistry

The Advanced Chemistry Group (ACG) is the major research grouping in Chemistry at the University of Newcastle.

The group brings together researchers who interact on a wide range of interests covering basic and applied chemistry at the cutting edge of science and technology.

In particular, the ACG deals with research into areas such as:

  • new battery materials
  • carbon sequestration
  • medicinal and natural products chemistry
  • colloid and surface chemistry
  • self-assembly and growth of functional carbon nanomaterials
  • specialty polymers (e.g. MIPs)
  • chemometrics
  • heteropolyoxometalate and gold nanoparticle catalysts
  • computational and quantum chemistry 

In the 2012 ERA national research assessment, ACG Researchers achieved a rating of well-above World standard in Macromolecular and Materials Chemistry research, and a rating of above World standard in Physical Chemistry research.

  • 600 and 400 MHz nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometers
  • MALDI-TOF and GC-mass spectrometry

  • RCG linux computing grid (~800 AMD opteron 2.8GHz cores)
  • Virtually all forms of optical spectroscopy for materials characterization (e.g. IR, UV-visible, fluorescence CD, etc.) and chemical analysis (e.g. ICP-AES and AAS)
  • Thermogravimetric/differential thermal analysers & differential scanning calorimeter
  • Quartz crystal microbalance
  • Dynamic and Static light scattering analysers
  • Potentiometric and spectrophotometric auto-titrators
  • Stopped flow spectrophotometer

Members of the group have offices and research laboratories in the Chemistry Building and NIER on the Callaghan campus and in Applied Science on the Ourimbah campus.
