Bollywood in Newcastle

Two inaugural Bollywood events were organised in February 2014 by the School of Design, Communication and Information Technology (DCIT).

The Bollywood 101 Film Festival and International Conference on Bollywood and Its Other(s) were held in Newcastle to analyse the growing importance of Bollywood cinema in Australia.

The film festival sold out a week in advance and was attended by special guests Consul General of India (Sydney) Mr Arun Kumar Goel, MP of Newcastle Mr Tim Owen, the University of Newcastle Pro Vice-Chancellor International and Advancement Mrs Winnie Eley and filmmakers including Mr Anupam Sharma, Raj Suri and John Winter.

Lecturer Dr Vikrant Kishore organised both events and worked with colleagues to include Bollywood as a research focus in the School of DCIT

The festival and conference brought together Australian and Indian industry experts and the event convenors hope to make it an annual occurrence as Bollywood cinema continues to grow in Australia.

"The University of Newcastle is delighted with the success of the Bollywood 101 Film Festival and Bollywood and Its Other(s) academic conference. Both events were reported in International media highlighting the significance of this non-metro event," said event co-convenor, Dr Susan Kerrigan
