Green Chemistry

Ionic liquids (ILs) have emerged recently as a possible new pre-treatment technology for the deconstruction of plant biomass. ILs are considered 'green' solvents due to their low volatility, potential recyclability and low environmental toxicity. The application of ILs however raises new challenges in that novel and simple recycling strategies will need to be developed to minimise the use of these costly chemicals.

This key and strategic interface between plant biology and chemistry will provide essential training for research students at all levels aiming to engage in the development of renewable energy through second generation biofuels.
