Bachelor of Biomedical Science

Summary

The Bachelor of Biomedical Science is offered over three years full-time or equivalent part-time. It offers access to medical sciences for undergraduates not undertaking professional degrees.

This degree complements our other programs which focus on human medicine and human health sciences.

During the degree students study a wide range of topics including human anatomy and physiology, pharmacology and the analysis of drug actions, bioinformatics, human genetics, genetic engineering, immunology, bacteriology, virology and all aspects of cell biochemistry. In addition, there is a focus on a number of specialist topics such as neuroscience, cancer biology and human genomics. In the third year of the degree students have the opportunity to participate in the design and implementation of a research project in a current area of scientific endeavour and throughout the degree there is a strong emphasis on problem-solving, working in teams and on the enhancement of written and oral communication skills.

Career opportunities

Students may find employment in biomedical research, pathology, veterinary science or hospital laboratories. They may also work in the pathology, veterinary, biotechnology or pharmaceutical industries, or in government or industry laboratories. Administrative careers requiring biomedical sciences knowledge are also open. The program is also suitable for those seeking entry into graduate medical programs, or postgraduate programs such as Pharmacy.

Assumed knowledge: Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry.

Non school leavers and previous Australian Year 12 students

Apply for entry through UAC.
Entry based on:

• previous Year 12 studies and/or
• Higher education, tertiary or post-secondary qualifications and/or
• Overseas qualifications considered equivalent to Australian qualifications. Relevant vocational experience.

International Students

International students currently undertaking:
- an Australian Year 12 in Australia
- an Australian Year 12 outside Australia
- an International Baccalaureat (IB) in Australia

Apply for entry through UAC.
Entry based on UAI or equivalent.

All other international students:

Apply direct to International Admissions.
Entry based on overseas qualifications considered equivalent to Australian qualifications, as well as satisfying English language requirements.

The Bachelor of Biomedical Science program provides students with an excellent basic knowledge in biomedical sciences. It is envisaged that students would find employment in biomedical research, pathology, veterinary science and hospital laboratories, biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, government and industry laboratories.

Program Structure

Qualification for the award of Bachelor of Biomedical Science requires the completion of 240 units.

Students select an Elective 10 unit course, at either 100, 200 or 300 Level: it may be offered by another School within the University.
