Description

The Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science (Honours) (Nuclear Medicine) is an AQF level 8 Bachelor Honours program.

Nuclear Medicine uses a mix of sophisticated medical imaging technology such as scintigraphy, SPECT, hybrid PET/CT, people skills and radioactive chemical compounds (radiopharmaceuticals) to image and/or treat a wide variety of injuries or diseases ranging from elite athletes with sports injuries, to cardiac and brain studies, to cancer patients.


Program learning outcomes

On successful completion of the program students will have:

Admission requirements

Eligibility for admission to this program is based on applicants meeting the minimum selection rank, or satisfying the requirements for an approved admission scheme.

Compulsory program requirements

Students will complete approximately 42 weeks of practical experience throughout the program in a variety of settings both locally and nationally. Travel, accommodation and related expenses for clinical placements will be the responsibility of the student.

Students will attend on-campus simulation classes in state-of-the-art training laboratories to prepare for, and supplement, the clinical placement experience.

UON nuclear medicine graduates are eligible to apply for registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) https://www.ahpra.gov.au/. Your accreditation allows you to work in Australia and overseas.

Program requirements

Qualification for the award of Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science (Honours) (Nuclear Medicine) requires completion of 320 units consisting of:

  • 300 units of Core Courses; and
  • 20 units of Elective Courses for Non-Graded Honours or 20 units of Research Project courses for Graded Honours.

Transition arrangements

From 2021 onwards INDH2490 Foundations of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health will be replacing MRSC1060 Medical Radiation Science 2A. Students who have previously completed MRSC1060 will not be required to complete INDH2490.

STAT1070 will be offered to Year 2 MRS students in Semester 1 2021, and Year 3 MRS students in Semester 1 2021. From 2022 onwards STAT1070 will remain in Semester 1 for MRS students.

MRSC2580 Nuclear Medicine Instrumentation 2B will be replaced by MRSC2560 Medical Radiation Science Instrumentation 2B (students who have successfully completed MRSC2560 will not be required to complete MRSC2580).

MRSC4380 Nuclear Medicine Professional Practice IVB will be replaced by MRSC4160 Medical Radiation Science Professional Practice IVB (students who have successfully completed MRSC4380 will not be required to complete MRSC4160).

From 2024 onwards, MRSC4340A and MRSC4340B will be replacing MRSC4330 and MRSC4160. Students who have previously completed both MRSC4330 AND MRSC4160 will not be required to complete MRSC4340A and MRSC4340B.

Ungraded Honours Stream

Electives 20 unit requirement

Complete 20 units of electives to fulfil the requirements of the program. Electives can be used to extend and complement your core studies with more courses in the same field of study, or from areas that might be of interest to you. Electives can be chosen from all courses available at the University that do not have any other conditions (such as a course requisite) applied to them.

Honours

All students who complete the requirements of the program will be eligible for Ungraded Honours. High performing students (minimum cumulative GPA of 5.5 at the end of Year 3) may be selected for admission into a Graded Honours stream. Positions within the Graded Honours stream are limited and entry is not guaranteed. Students selected into the Graded Honours stream are required to successfully complete 20 units of research courses as detailed in the Program Plan. The criteria for the determination of class of Honours are detailed in the Bachelor Honours policy [000990] section 5.2.2. Enquiries concerning eligibility for Graded Honours should be directed to the Program Convenor.


Additional information

Through the Pathways and Academic Learning Support Centre, students can access a free suite of NUPrep preparation courses as well as Academic Learning Support.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students can draw on the assistance and support provided by the Indigenous Student Support and Development service through the Wollotuka Institute.

During clinical placement students may be required to wear properly fitted respirators. Fit testing is the process to ensure the respirator fits the wearers face snugly, creating a seal to minimise airbourne particles travelling through gaps between the wearer's skin and the respirator. Students will need to arrange and pay for their own fit testing before attending their first placement and every subsequent 12 months.
