Description

Within the Bachelor of Teaching (Humanities) (Honours) program the University of Newcastle aims to develop the knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary for a highly successful career teaching in one or more of the following areas:

Graduates of this program will be able to seek employment as 7-12 (Secondary) teachers in and beyond the New South Wales Government, Catholic, and Independent school sectors. The program aims to develop graduates who are inspirational teachers with the capability to act professionally, ethically and effectively in their Secondary school destinations; insightful scholars with the capability to engage in rational enquiry into curriculum, policy and practice; and innovative leaders with the capability to play a constructive role in public discourse on and beyond education.

Compulsory program requirements
Professional experience courses are scheduled to give students the opportunity to link theory with practice. Students start the first professional experience placement by observing the teacher and working with small groups in the classroom. This is followed by initial experiences in teaching the full class under the direct supervision of the teacher. Students build on their teaching competencies during the 90 days of placement throughout the program, by the time of graduation they have developed the classroom skills and the professional aptitudes of a competent teacher. Some placements overlap with university vacations, so students should check the professional experience dates before booking travel. See Professional Experience Unit

International students studying this program on campus are required to enrol full time to comply with their student visa requirements and complete their study in the standard minimum program duration. Program requirements
All students are required to successfully complete 320 units including 140 units of core courses, a 80 unit Major, a 60 unit Minor and 40 units of electives. (Students may elect to utilise 20 units of their electives to upgrade their minor to a second major or utilise 40 units of their electives to undertake a second minor where Compulsory specialist studies courses are shared with first major or minor). Prior to undertaking a second minor subject, students must seek advice from the Program Convenor as only some subject combinations are possible. Students also choose one of the three streams available with the Bachelor of Teaching (Humanities)(Honours) program.
1. The Standard stream (Ungraded) requires the completion of 140 units of core courses.
2. The Special Education Major (Ungraded)* is only available to students who commenced their studies in this program before 2016. It requires the completion of 40 units of compulsory special education courses and a 20 unit special education internship. *Please note students undertaking the Special Education Major must utilise all electives.
3. The Graded Honours stream, is only available to those students who meet and maintain the eligible requirements; students will be required to complete 140 units of core courses and 30 units of compulsory research courses. Please note students undertaking the Graded Honours stream must utilise 30 units of their electives and will therefore not have sufficient electives remaining to upgrade their minor to a second major.
Students must complete a minimum of 40 units at each level (1000, 2000, 3000, 4000) with no more than 120 units at the 1000 level.
Students must only complete courses that form part of their program and must not complete more than 320 units.
Students may not exceed 320 units in order to complete a second minor.
Students must undertake one major (80 units) comprised of 20 units of compulsory courses plus 60 units of courses chosen from the course list with no more than 20 units at the 1000 level and at least 20 units at the 3000 level (except Business Studies which has 40 units of compulsory courses, student must then select 40 units of courses chosen from the course list with at least 20 units at the 3000 level). Students must also undertake one minor (60 units) comprised of 20 units of compulsory courses plus 40 units of courses chosen from the course list , with at least 20 units at the 2000 level or higher. Students may elect to utilise 20 units of their elective to upgrade their minor to a major, in which case they must ensure that at least 20 units at the 3000 level is undertaken. Please note Chinese and Legal Studies may only be undertaken as a Minor.
Please Note:If undertaking a MAJOR or MINOR in one of the following areas please note:• To teach STUDIES OF RELIGION in NSW students should enrol in no more than 20 units in any one religious tradition, and should not complete more than 10 units of AHIS courses (ancient religious history or traditions).• To teach ENGLISH in NSW students must enrol in at least 30 units of literature. Additional units may be taken in creative writing, film or other literature.• To teach MODERN HISTORY in NSW students must enrol in at least 10 units of Australian History courses.• To teach DRAMA in NSW students must ensure course choices cover performance, production, theory and preferably Australian Drama.

Core courses in the Graded Honours stream have been revised, EDUC4975 and EDUC4985 have been replaced with EDUC4975A and EDUC4975B. If you have already completed EDUC4975 and EDUC4985 you do not need to complete EDUC4975A and EDUC4975B.

All students who complete the requirements of the program will be eligible for ungraded Honours.
High performing students may be eligible to undertake the Graded Honours stream.
Students admitted to the graded Honours stream are required to successfully complete 30 units of research courses.
