An Honours program is offered as an additional year to the undergraduate program. The Honours program consists of a fourth year of full-time study (1 year) or the equivalent part-time study (2 years). Courses are offered on a semester basis, i.e. two semesters per year. The Honours program consists of a research project on a topic determined in consultation with your research supervisor. The program also involves a skills development strand to assist you in the development of your research skills and the writing of your research thesis. Honours is highly regarded by potential employers and provides entry into a research career.

The Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science (Honours) is only offered at the Ourimbah Campus.

The University of Newcastle is a leading research University and students have the opportunity of being involved with research at the forefront of their discipline. New laboratories are available in the purpose built Exercise & Sport Science building at the Ourimbah campus.

Research within Exercise and Sport Science is diverse and wide-ranging, encompassing areas such as exercise physiology and biomechanics. Our research focus ranges from the general population through to elite athletes. Examples of current research interests include motion analysis of field sports athletes, strength training & nutritional supplementation, compression garments, low back pain and women in sport.

As a graduate of the Exercise and Sport Science (Honours) program you will qualify for a wide range of careers. As more and more people realise the importance of exercise for our health, the career opportunities for Exercise Scientists are expanding. Examples include careers in a variety of roles in both the public and private sector. The sports industry offers opportunities for graduates to work as sport scientists, strength & conditioning coaches, development officers and consultants. The health industry employs graduates in health education/promotion, as cardiac/respiratory technicians and as exercise scientists. Honours graduates are in high demand in the above careers. An Honours degree can also lead to a research career in academia or elsewhere.

All students can now enrol in an undergraduate Diploma in Languages alongside their main degree program. This diploma will enhance proficiency in another language or languages, and will increase international career opportunities. Subject to course availability, this additional program will generally add an extra year to studies, and students will graduate with a Diploma in Languages as well as their other degree. Please note that all language courses are held on campus (face to face) at Callaghan.

Applicants must have successfully completed the Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science or an equivalent program with a minimum GPA of 5.0 (credit grade average) calculated from:

  • Across the entire degree program; or
  • Across a major in the proposed discipline of study, if the degree program includes such a major; or
  • Across 80 units of 3000 level courses (which must include at least 40 units of 3000 level courses in the major where a major exists); or
  • Where the applicant has completed less than 80 units at 3000 level, a GPA of 5.5 calculated from at least 60 units of 3000 level courses (which must include at least 40 units of 3000 level courses in the major where a major exists).

In exceptional circumstances, the above requirements may be varied with permission of the Head of School and Pro-Vice Chancellor. No more than two years must have elapsed since completion of the undergraduate degree.

  • To apply for entry to this Honours program you will need to apply directly to the Faculty of Science and Information Technology.

    • Direct Admissions Application form; and

There are three classes of Honours: Class I, Class II and Class III. Class II will have two divisions, namely Division 1 and Division 2. International students must comply with the University of Newcastle's English language proficiency requirements. All International Students enrolled in the program will be provided with an Orientation of the Faculty of Science and Information Technology and the University at the commencement of each semester. Students who have impaired function in their hands, arms, legs, back, vision or hearing, will have difficulty pursuing these programs. It is highly advisable for any prospective student with such disabilities to contact the Faculty to discuss the issue. The Faculty accepts responsibility, in liaison with the student Support Unit, for providing reasonable accommodations to allow students with disabilities to complete the program. The support structures of the Student Support Unit will be available to assist any students with a disability or chronic illness.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students can draw on the assistance and support provided by the Indigenous Student Support and Development service through the Wollotuka Institute.

The Honours program is normally undertaken over one year of full-time study or two years part-time. Students are required to complete 80 units.

Students who commenced the Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Science (Honours) program prior to Semester 1, 2013 will complete their program enrolling in SPOR course codes. Students enrolling from Semester 1, 2013 will enrol in EXSS course codes.
