Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary)/ Bachelor of Technology

As a teacher of technology subjects, you will help students to apply skills and knowledge to real life situations. Students design, make, and evaluate products and systems. Students learn about innovation, a range of technological applications, and the impact of technology on society and more generally on the environment. There are two pathways to choose from:

Design Technologies (DT) Teaching Specialisation:

• First Teaching Areas: Design & Technology plus Industrial Technology
• Second Teaching Area: Food Technology OR Textiles Technology OR Engineering Technology

Computing Technology (CT) Teaching Specialisation:

• First Teaching Area: Computing Technology: Information Systems
• Second Teaching Area: Computing Technology: Software Design

In addition to these areas, graduates of this program also will be qualified to teach the Year 7-8 Technology Mandatory syllabus.

The Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary)/Bachelor of Technology program at the University of Newcastle aims to develop the knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary for a successful career in teaching. Graduates of this program will be able to seek employment as 7-12 (Secondary) teachers in New South Wales (NSW) Government, Catholic, and Independent school sectors. The program aims to develop inspirational teachers who can act professionally, ethically, and effectively in their schools; insightful scholars who can engage in rational enquiry into curriculum, policy and practice; and innovative leaders who can play a constructive role in public discourse on education and other aspects of Australian society.

This program is pending approval from the NSW Institute of Teachers.

The Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary)/Bachelor of Technology is taught by academics from within the School of Education at the University of Newcastle, whose research is deepening understandings of curriculum, policy, pedagogy, assessment, literacy, learning, and leadership across the education sector.

Graduates will have been provided with a solid foundation in Quality Teaching, a model of pedagogy widely adopted within the teaching profession and endorsed by educational leaders across the sector, that is informed by recent research from within the School of Education that has identified the elements of teaching that have significant influence on student performance and equity.

The program builds on existing strong partnerships with schools in NSW, particularly those in the Hunter and Central Coast Regions. As an important and significant part of their program of study, students will have experienced a continuous engagement with the profession through participating in formal and informal professional experiences in and across a range of educational contexts and settings. The professional experience opportunities in the program will have allowed students to study teaching as it unfolds in diverse educational settings, to develop their professional dispositions, and to demonstrate their attainment of graduate teacher standards. These professional studies will have culminated in a special course designed to support them as New Scheme Teachers, to effectively monitor, evaluate, plan and keep records of their ongoing professional learning, and to report on their attainment of the NSW Institute of Teachers' standards for "professional competence" once they enter the teaching profession.

Opportunities exist for employment in educational settings in NSW Department of Education and Training, Catholic Education and Independent school systems; and in public and private school sectors both nationally and internationally.

A Graduate Certificate in Theology http://www.newcastle.edu.au/program/12211.html can provide training and development in theology for prospective teachers who are looking for a competitive edge when seeking employment in religious schools, especially the Catholic School system.

The program can be undertaken concurrently with either an undergraduate or postgraduate teacher training program. You will need to ensure that you are able to meet the demands of both programs.

Current Australian Year 12 Students: Apply for entry through UAC. Entry based on ATAR or equivalent. Non school leavers and previous Australian Year 12 students: Apply for entry through UAC. Entry based on:

• Previous Year 12 studies and/or
• Higher education, tertiary, post-secondary qualifications and/or
• Overseas qualifications considered equivalent to Australian qualifications.
• Relevant vocational experience.

International Students

International students currently undertaking:

• an Australian Year 12 in Australia
• an Australian Year 12 outside Australia
• an International Baccalaureat (IB) in Australia Apply for entry through UAC. Entry based on ATAR or equivalent.

All other international students: Apply direct to International Admissions. Entry based on overseas qualifications considered equivalent to Australian qualifications, as well as satisfying English language requirement.

HSC or equivalent.

Band 4 English in NSW HSC. Students who do not meet this requirement on entry will have to demonstrate equivalent achievement before graduation as per NSW Institute of Teachers requirements.

HSC study in the area of your preferred teaching specialisation if completing the Bachelor of Teaching (Secondary)/Bachelor of Technology. For example: Chemistry and Mathematics, plus (Food Technology or Visual Arts, or Textiles and Design, or Design and Technology, or Industrial Technology, or Engineering Science).

Honours is not available in this program. The degree will be awarded ‘with Distinction’ to those students who gain a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 6.0 or over based on all studies undertaken in the program.

The programs in the School of Education incorporate both traditional and innovative approaches to professional experience. Students will complete the equivalent of 90 days professional experience in relevant school settings in a four-year Bachelor program. This matches the current NSW Institute of Teachers (NSWIT) requirements for professional experience in four-year undergraduate initial teacher education programs.

NOTE: All teacher education students are required to do one professional experience placement of 20 days at a location outside of the local region (ie. in other parts of NSW or Australia). Students normally do this "out-of-area" placement in the third year of the program.

Graduates of an accredited initial teacher education program will be eligible for registration with the NSW Institute of Teachers, and can pursue careers as teachers or educators in both the NSW Department of Education and Training, Catholic Education and Independent school systems; and in public and private sectors both nationally and internationally.

The Faculty of Education and Arts accepts the responsibility for providing reasonable accommodations for international students, in liaison with the International Development Services unit support team, which offers practical assistance and advice to international students. All new International Students will be provided with an Orientation of the Faculty of Education and Arts and the University at the commencement of each semester. There is a designated International Students Liaison Officer in all Schools within the Faculty of Education and Arts.
