The increasing demand for highly qualified and professionally competent leaders, managers and educators has become an important feature of the modern professions worldwide. The Master of Theology, a post-graduate program that offers the opportunity to theological graduates, or graduates in cognate disciplines, to deepen their learning, explore theological disciplines in a depth they had been unable to in their first theological program, and better equip them with the higher learning skills they had begun to develop through their Undergraduate studies. The program provides graduates with training and experience (according to personal development needs) by developing expertise in the fast moving areas of: theological studies, develop a deeper understanding of key aspects of an ancient and worldwide set of religious traditions.
Students in the Master of Theology may take a generic program or specialise in one of the following areas:
- Spirituality
- Liturgical Studies
- Religious Education
- Mission and Culture
- Pastoral Ministry.

Admission to the Master of Theology requires the completion of a relevant undergraduate degree at the University of Newcastle or other tertiary institution.

If you wish to apply for credit for studies completed at another institution or if you are changing programs within the University and wish to transfer your credit to the new program, go to http://www.newcastle.edu.au/service/credit-transfer/ and click on ‘How to Apply for Credit’.
Students who have successfully completed the Graduate Certificate in Theology will be eligible for 40 units of credit in the Master of Theology.

International students who wish to enrol in this program from their home country and study by distance education are permitted to apply, however this program is not available to international students who are studying on campus in Australia.

All Theology courses offered as 'Online-Broken Bay Institute (BBI)', 'Seminar-Broken Bay Institute (BBI)' or 'Distance-Broken Bay Institute (BBI)’, will be taught through The Broken Bay Institute, a leading provider in online/seminar/distance Catholic theological education. BBI courses are open to all and delivered in partnership with the University of Newcastle. For more information, visit The Broken Bay Institute website and make direct contact with the Institute http://www.bbi.catholic.edu.au/. All courses offered as 'Callaghan' or 'online Callaghan' or 'distance Callaghan' will be run from the Callaghan campus.
All students can access additional learning development mechanisms provided by the Centre for Teaching and Learning.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students can draw on the assistance and support provided by the Indigenous Student Support and Development service through the Wollotuka Institute.

The program can be completed over one year full-time or the part-time equivalent.
Qualification for the Master of Theology award requires the successful completion of 80 units of coursework, which comprises:
a) 20 units core courses THEO6030 and THEO6040
b) 40 units compulsory courses
c) 20 units directed courses chosen from the list of Directed courses.
The requirements differ for each specialisation and courses not listed in the specialisation may be undertaken with approval from the Program Convenor.
Students can enrol in up to 20 units of approved courses at the 2000, 3000 or 4000 level as per policy 000306 Rules Governing Postgraduate Coursework Awards.

Students who commenced the program prior to 2011 and are enrolled in the Religious Education Specialisation:
- may count THEO6011 as a compulsory course, or
- may undertake EDUC6043 and count THEO6011 as a directed course.
