The Graduate Certificate in Innovation and Commercialisation is a postgraduate coursework program which will provide research commercialisation training for the next generation of researchers as a means of equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary to bring research-based ideas, inventions and innovations to market. The program includes a significant amount of case study material. There are specific courses on Research and Development, Managing Intellectual Property and Organisational Behaviour as well as a choice from a Directed list of courses in disciplines such as entrepreneurship, market research and other management areas.

The Graduate Certificate in Innovation and Commercialisation (GCIC) program may be completed in a single year of study at the University of Newcastle, with the program of four courses are available fully on-line. The University's advanced online delivery platform, provided through market leader, Graduate School.Com provides flexible delivery, suitable for busy professionals. The program content draws upon the culture of innovation and commercialisation within the University of Newcastle, and would be of benefit for all professionals interested in commercialisation.

The Graduate Certificate provides skills and knowledge to those interested in pursing a career in the commercialisation of ideas, inventions and innovations and in the delivery of innovative research-based products and services.

Graduates will be able to transition more readily into non-academic environments, particularly into senior management roles in industry and research and development organisations. Career opportunities also exist in university commercialisation offices and smaller innovating companies.

All students can now enrol in an undergraduate Diploma in Languages alongside their main degree program. This diploma will enhance proficiency in another language or languages, and will increase international career opportunities. Subject to course availability, this additional program will generally add an extra year to studies, and students will graduate with a Diploma in Languages as well as their other degree. Please note that all language courses are held on campus (face to face) at Callaghan.

International students will be supported by current University and Faculty support mechanisms. There will be a requirement for a minimum IELTS result or equivalent as per University policy, given the need for students to work at a high level in the language of instruction. Students studying online will be supported by BlackBoard and will also be able to contact staff via email.

Delivery of this program is on-line and on-campus, with on-campus lectures scheduled during the day in the majority of cases.

Students undertaking the Graduate Certificate in Innovation and Commercialisation must successfully complete a total of 40 units, with 30 units of core and 10 units of a directed elective. Students may undertake studies either part-time or full-time.

A program revision was implemented for 2012, and some courses were removed from the program and replaced with new courses. Continuing students who have successfully completed GSBS6020 must not enrol in GSBS6004. Continuing students who have not yet successfully completed GSBSS6020 must take new core course GSBS6004. For course replacement information, students must take note of details contained under 'Transitional Arrangements' in Course Handbooks. Continuing students affected by the program revision or who are experiencing transition problems are advised to consult with the relevant Program Officer.
