The program offers a pathway for Industrial Design Advanced Diploma holders to complete a University qualification. The Program's courses are based on Project Centred Learning Strategies where students are able to direct the outcome of their learning.

In addition to lectures, there is the opportunity of working on a professional level projects. The project can be undertaken in conjunction with an external manufacturer or a mentor.

The Bachelor of Industrial Design program offers a pathway for Industrial Designers with an advanced diploma to a degree program. The Program comprises 80 units of study comprising 40 units of core courses and 40 units of directed courses allowing students to be exposed to a diversity of experience at University. Students undertake an Advanced Diploma Product Design and Innovation or approved equivalent studies at a university, institute of technology or polytechnic either in Australia or overseas, which gives them entry through UAC into the University of Newcastle, where they complete their fourth year and receive 160 units of credit towards their program.

Employment opportunities are significant. They range from working for large corporations in development and refinement of products before manufacture, to freelance consultancy for specialist projects.

Industrial designers provide a vital link between the consumer and manufacturers of a wide range of products including appliances, electronic goods, furniture, toys, set design, exhibition displays, etc.

Graduates will be innovative and creative thinkers, able to solve design problems in a team or individually. They will be able to express design ideas clearly and apply processing skills to develop, evaluate and present design concepts. Skills will be multidimensional - graduates will be able to link technology, management and marketing concepts, and participate professionally and effectively in design research.

All students can now enrol in an undergraduate Diploma in Languages alongside their main degree program. This diploma will enhance proficiency in another language or languages, and will increase international career opportunities. Subject to course availability, this additional program will generally add an extra year to studies, and students will graduate with a Diploma in Languages as well as their other degree. Please note that all language courses are held on campus (face to face) at Callaghan.

To be admitted to the program students must have both:

1) An Advanced Diploma in Product Design and Innovation (or approved equivalent) and

2) an ATAR equivalent consistent with University entry requirements.

The program consists of 240 units, however, as students who have completed an Advanced Diploma Product Design and Innovation or approved equivalent studies at a university, institute of technology or polytechnic either in Australia or overseas, will receive 160 units of credit, therefore requiring completion of 80 units of study in order to be awarded the degree.
