The Master of Engineering Science Degree is a postgraduate coursework program suitable for science and engineering graduates. Students have the opportunity to create the kind of Masters program that best meets their requirements through the choice of the specialisations. These specialisations fall into three categories, covering Technical Courses, Management and an Engineering Project (which may be conducted in the work place or on campus). Technical courses are offered in the areas of Mineral Processing and
Energy. Students who have completed a Graduate Certificate in Engineering Science or a Graduate Certificate in Innovation and Commercialisation (and meet the MEngSc entry requirements) are required to complete another specialisation to be awarded the Master of Engineering Science. Please note: Students are unable to combine Mineral Processing with the Energy specialisation.

This Masters program recognises the different career pathways that science and engineering professionals working in industry choose to take, usually either managerial or technical. The technical specialisations are especially relevant to the energy sector (e.g. Clean Coal Technology), and also to those who wish to work in the coal or mineral processing industries. Others interested in research and development, innovation and commercialisation sectors will also benefit.

1. Four year Bachelor of Engineering degree (or equivalent), from an internationally recognised University.
2. Three year Bachelor of Science degree (or equivalent) with Honours and/or demonstration of relevant work experience (minimum of two years), in a discipline related to the proposed area of study.
3. There are no accreditation requirements; consequently there is no need for pre-requisites to be established.

Students who have been awarded a Graduate Certificate in Innovation and Commercialisation (GCIC) are eligible to receive 40 units of credit towards the Master of Engineering Science, upon successful enrolment.

Students have the opportunity to obtain considerable practical experience in this program via the Engineering Project. This experience may be based on an engineering consultancy, design, or research project and can be conducted either in the work place or on the University campus. Technical courses will also expose students to practical demonstration of new technology in the laboratory.

Currently, Engineers Australia does not offer accreditation for postgraduate study.

International students will be supported by current University and Faculty support mechanisms. There will be a requirement for a minimum 6.5 IELTS result (equivalent), given the need for students to work at a high level in the language of instruction. Students studying online will be supported by BlackBoard and will also be able to contact staff by email.

Delivery of this program occurs in several ways. Technical courses are available by a combination of on campus day-time delivery and block-release intensive delivery. Management specialisations are available by (i) on-line and (ii) on campus day-time delivery. The Engineering Project is available on campus day-time delivery and in the work place, with employer support.
Please note:
1) Students are unable to combine Mineral Processing with the Energy specialisation.
2) Students who enter the Master of Engineering Science and who have already successfully completed GENG6005 will be required to undertake an additional 10 units of study. Please contact the Student Hub or Program Convenor for further information.

The Master of Engineering Science program consists of courses chosen from two specialisations, each of 40 units. Students must successfully complete a minimum of 80 units of study, consisting of two 40 unit specialisations.
Back to topTransition Arrangements
A program revision was implemented for 2012, and some courses were removed from the program and replaced with new courses. For course replacement information, students must make note of details contained under ‘Transitional Arrangements’ in Course Handbooks. Continuing students affected by the program revision or who are experiencing transition problems are advised to consult with the relevant Program Officer.
Students who have already successfully completed GSBS6503 must not take INFT6304. Students who have already successfully completed GEBU6020 must not take INFT6009.
