Description
Nurses are an essential part of the health care system and work to promote and maintain the health of individuals and communities. Nursing provides varied career opportunities and nurses fulfil diverse roles such as clinicians, educators, researchers and managers.
Program learning outcomes
On successful completion of the program students will have:
- incorporated the professional standards of the nursing discipline, health care ethics and legal principles, using a framework of critical thinking and reasoning in the provision of nursing practice.
- demonstrated capability to perform competently the literacies of verbal, non-verbal and written communication; numeracy, and digital technology as applied to the nursing context across a range of settings.
- provided professional practice which is culturally capable gained through the acquisition of knowledge, skills and attitudes, informed by evidence, to enable delivery as a safe practitioner.
- established effective, collaborative and therapeutic relationships with individuals, families and the interprofessional team, which supports their engagement in a person-centred approach.

Admission requirements
Eligibility for admission to this program is based on applicants meeting the minimum selection rank, or satisfying the requirements for an approved admission scheme.
The University of Newcastle accepts a range of qualifications to determine eligibility for admission. These include, but are not limited to, Australian or overseas senior secondary qualifications (such as the HSC), prior tertiary studies, prior TAFE/VET studies, and completed enabling programs.
The Bachelor of Nursing does not accept Certificate III; however, the School Based Traineeship (SBT) may be recognised for admission.

Credit transfer

Students holding the following qualifications may be eligible for specified 80 units of credit on application and can complete the degree in two calendar years:
To be eligible for 80 units of specified credit, applicants must hold all of the following:
- current AHPRA registration as an Enrolled Nurse, and
- a Diploma of Nursing completed within 5 years of admission, and
- a current Provide First Aid Certificate (HLTAID011 or HLTAID003).
International Registered Nurses holding the following qualifications may be eligible for specified 80 units of credit on application and can complete the degree in two calendar years:
To be eligible for 80 units of specified credit, applicants must hold all of the following:
- Completed a post-secondary level pre-registration nursing program of at least three years full-time or part-time equivalent, within 5 years of admission;
- Registered or licensed to practice as a ‘first level’ or ‘professional’ nurse (however titled) by the relevant registration/licensing authority in countries where program was undertaken.
Credit will be assessed on an individual basis.
Please note that time restrictions apply to the granting of credit in this program.
Compulsory program requirements
Students should also be aware that they may be required to undertake professional experience placement and/or classes outside normal semester dates.
Bachelor of Nursing (Hunter)
You will undertake your on campus studies at the Callaghan Campus, Newcastle.
Bachelor of Nursing (Central Coast)
You will undertake your on campus studies at the Central Coast Clinical School, Gosford.
Clinical placement is conducted in a variety of settings, including medical-surgical facilities, acute care, community health and major teaching hospitals, mental health settings, aged-care facilities, rural and remote health placements, international placements.
As well as clinical placement venues in Newcastle, Central Coast, and the Mid North Coast, it is expected that you will be available to attend venues across regional and remote centres in the Hunter and far north, south and west of NSW including but not limited to: Northern NSW (eg Tweed Heads, Grafton, Lismore), Hunter New England (eg Armidale, Tamworth, Moree), Western NSW (eg Walgett, Bourke, Dubbo, Cobar), Far West (eg Broken Hill, Balranald), Central West (eg Bathurst, Orange, Cowra).
Travel, accommodation and related expenses for clinical placements will be the responsibility of the student.

Graduates of this program are eligible to apply for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, under the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme administered by the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

Honours
Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) is available as an additional one-year, full-time program or equivalent part-time.
Candidates for Honours are selected on the basis of academic achievement.
Additional information
Through the Pathways and Academic Learning Support Centre, students can access a free suite of NUPrep preparation courses as well as Academic Learning Support.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students can draw on the assistance and support provided by the Indigenous Student Support and Development service through the Wollotuka Institute.
During clinical placement students may be required to wear properly fitted respirators. Fit testing is the process to ensure the respirator fits the wearers face snugly, creating a seal to minimise airbourne particles travelling through gaps between the wearer's skin and the respirator. Students will need to arrange and pay for their own fit testing before attending their first placement and every subsequent 12 months.
