Description
The Diploma in Languages offers the opportunity to become proficient in a Language Other Than English (LOTE) or to acquire skills in a range of languages other than English, as well as Australian Sign Language (AUSLAN). The Diploma in Languages is available to Australian students, residents and International students as a standalone program or as concurrent enrolment alongside an undergraduate program or a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP) Postgraduate program.
Students who have completed langauge courses as part of their degree may be able to count up to 40 units of credit into the Diploma in Languages. This means students may only need to complete an additional 40 units of language courses to receive a Diploma in Languages.
Program learning outcomes
On successful completion of the program students will have:
- technical and theoretical knowledge and concepts, with depth in some areas within a field of work and learning
- cognitive and communication skills to identify, analyse, synthesise and act on information from a range of sources
- cognitive, technical and communication skills to analyse, plan, design and evaluate approaches to unpredictable problems and/or management requirements
- specialist technical and creative skills to express ideas and perspectives
- communication skills to transfer knowledge and specialised skills to others and demonstrate understanding of knowledge
- demonstrated the application of knowledge and skills with depth in some areas of specialisation, in known or changing contexts
- demonstrated the application of knowledge and skills to transfer and apply theoretical concepts and/or technical and/or creative skills in a range of situations
- demonstrated the application of knowledge and skills with personal responsibility and autonomy in performing complex technical operations with responsibility for own outputs in relation to broad parameters for quantity and quality
- demonstrated the application of knowledge and skills with initiative and judgement to organise the work of self and others and plan, coordinate and evaluate the work of teams within broad but generally well-defined parameters

Admission requirements
Eligibility for admission to this program is based on applicants meeting the minimum selection rank, or satisfying the requirements for an approved admission scheme.
The University of Newcastle accepts a range of qualifications to determine eligibility for admission. These include, but are not limited to, Australian or overseas senior secondary qualifications (such as the HSC), prior tertiary studies, prior TAFE/VET studies, and completed enabling programs.

Academic requirements for program completion
Total units required
80 units
Program duration
1 year full-time or part-time equivalent up to 6 years maximum.
International students studying this program on campus are required to enrol full time to comply with their student visa requirements and complete their study in the standard minimum program duration. International students requiring enrolment advice should review the program plan corresponding to the semester and year of commencement and can contact their Program Advisor at ProgramAdvice@newcastle.edu.au
Program requirements
The Diploma in Languages requires students to successfully complete 80 units of courses chosen from the course list .
Please note, domestic students undertaking the Diploma of Languages program concurrently with another undergraduate program (primary program) must maintain a full time enrolment of 30 units per semester in their primary program to be eligible for full-time enrolment status by relevant government agencies.
Students should note, not all languages are available online.
Students must only complete courses that form part of the program and must not complete more than 80 units.

Transition arrangements
Minors and Electives Removed - 2022
From 2022, the option to complete a minor (Chinese, Japanese Studies, French Studies, or German) or electives in the Diploma in Languages has been removed. The program instead requires students to successfully complete 80 units of directed courses.
Students who have completed electives prior to 2022 will continue to count these electives toward the completion of their program (maximum 20 units of electives permitted).
Students who commenced a minor prior to 2022 can choose to continue completing courses listed under a particular minor (please refer to the Pre-2022 Program Plan) however please be aware minors are not formally awarded.

Through the Pathways and Academic Learning Support Centre, students can access a free suite of NUPrep preparation courses as well as Academic Learning Support.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students can draw on the assistance and support provided by the Indigenous Student Support and Development service through the Wollotuka Institute.
