Master of Teaching (Primary)

The Master of Teaching (Primary) program at the University of Newcastle aims to develop the knowledge, skills and dispositions necessary for a highly successful career in teaching. Graduates of this program will be able to seek employment as K-6 (Primary) teachers in and beyond the New South Wales (NSW Government, Catholic, and Independent school sectors).

The program aims to develop graduates who are inspirational teachers with the capability to act professionally, ethically and effectively in their Primary school destinations; insightful scholars with the capability to engage in rational enquiry into curriculum, policy and practice; and innovative leaders with the capability to play a constructive role in public discourse on and beyond education.

A Graduate Certificate in Theology http://www.newcastle.edu.au/program/12211.html can provide training and development in theology for prospective teachers who are looking for a competitive edge when seeking employment in religious schools, especially the Catholic School system.

The program can be undertaken concurrently with either an undergraduate or postgraduate teacher training program. You will need to ensure that you are able to meet the demands of both programs.

Applicants must have successfully completed a relevant Bachelor degree from a recognised University or equivalent tertiary education institution.

To be eligible for entry to the Master of Teaching (Primary) program, applicants will need to have either 2 (semester-long) courses from 4 Key Learning Areas (KLAs) of the Primary curriculum covered, OR 4 (semester-long) courses from one area and 2 (semester-long) courses from 2 other areas OR 8 (semester-long) courses from one area.

The six KLA areas are:

• English
• Maths
• Science and Technology
• Personal Development Health Physical Education
• Creative Arts
• Human Society and Its Environment

For example, if you had 2 Maths, 2 English, 2 Science and 2 Creative Arts courses in your degree, you would be eligible to apply for entry into the MTeach(Primary).

Or, if you had 4 HSIE, 2 Creative Arts and 2 Maths courses in your degree, you would also be eligible to apply.

If you do not meet these criteria, you may need to pick up extra single courses.

The Master of Teaching (Primary) program shall be awarded with Distinction where students achieve a grade point average of 6.0 or above.

The programs in the School of Education incorporate both traditional and innovative approaches to professional experience. Students will complete the equivalent of 60 days professional experience in relevant school settings in this two year full time equivalent (FTE) Masters program. This matches the current NSW Institute of Teachers (NSWIT) requirements for professional experience in a two year FTE graduate entry program.

Graduates of an accredited initial teacher education program will be eligible for registration with the NSW Institute of Teachers, and can pursue careers as teachers or educators in both the NSW Department of Education and Training, Catholic Education and Independent school systems; and in public and private sectors both nationally and internationally.

International students must comply with the University of Newcastle's English language proficiency requirements. All International Students enrolled in the program will be provided with an orientation to familiarise them with the rules, expectations, facilities and services offered by the University.
