Postgraduate coursework in Environmental Management is undertaken in an integrated program comprising:

  • Graduate Certificate in Environmental Management http://www.newcastle.edu.au/program/11699.html

  • Master of Environmental Management (Honours) http://www.newcastle.edu.au/program/11701.html

The program aims to produce graduates with the capability to constructively engage with the complex environmental concerns that confront contemporary societies. It emphasises the integration of theory and practice and provides an interdisciplinary grounding in sustainability, environmental management, impact assessment and policy. On completion of the program, the graduate will have a good understanding of the key approaches in environmental management, sustainability and decision-making, and well developed problem solving skills. The program is open to graduates from a wide range of backgrounds and experience. It caters for both mid-career professionals wishing to gain a postgraduate qualification, upgrade and extend skills and knowledge, or move into the environmental field, and suitably qualified graduates from cognate fields.

Students who have satisfactorily completed the specified units of the Master of Environmental Management program may apply for admission to the Master (Honours) program.

Credit may be granted for coursework courses if they can be demonstrated to be directly equivalent in terms of content and depth of study to the corresponding courses in the environmental management program, and they were completed within the previous 5 years. Credit will be granted by the Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Science and IT in accordance with the Rules Governing Postgraduate Coursework Awards. If you wish to apply for credit for studies completed at another institution, or if you are changing programs within the University and wish to transfer your credit to your new program, go to http://www.newcastle.edu.au/service/credit-transfer/ and click on How to apply for credit.

Back to topRequirements and Structure

The program can be completed over eighteen months full-time or up to 6 years part-time. The initial coursework components for the Masters program is online, with courses offered on a trimester basis. The Environmental Management Project components of the degree can only be completed on-campus and on a semester basis, either full-time across one semester or part-time across two semesters.

The Masters (Honours) program comprises eight courses (80 units) consisting of at least four Group A directed courses (40 units), and at least two Group B directed courses (20 units) and up to two elective courses (20 units) with the addition of a research project (40 units) comprised of two compulsory Environmental Management Project courses.

Elective course choices may be taken from the Group A and Group B lists below or from any other available courses offered within the University (providing that those courses are open to all students).

Students who commenced the program prior to 2012 and have:

  • successfully completed BIOL6002, GSBS6090 or PHIL6920 will be able to count them as a Group Directed Course towards their program.

  • failed BIOL6002, GSBS6090 or PHIL6920 may enrol in an alternative course from the Group B Directed Course List.
