Back to topDescription

The Bachelor of Environmental Science and Management is a science degree program with an emphasis on courses dealing with the environment and its management.

Back to topWhy study with us?

The core courses of the program incorporate specialisations in environmental planning and impact assessment, environmental sampling, data analysis, statistics, environmental values and ethics, and biological science. A major sequence of study is chosen from one of the following:

  • Living Systems (Biodiversity, Conservation and Restoration)
  • Physical Systems (Air, Land and Water)
  • Social Systems (Sustainability, Policy and Futures)

Back to topCareer Opportunities

Opportunities include Environmental Officer in Local Council or State Government departments; research in climate, soil science, water, flora and fauna in agencies such as the CSIRO. Environmental management in government regulatory units such as forestry, electricity, EPA, water resources, soil conservation and national parks and wildlife. Aerial and field surveying and computer-based data processing through national and state mapping authorities; tourism and recreation-based research and planning; international aid and development projects through international agencies; and preparing environmental impact statements for government and other bodies as a private consultant.

Back to topStudy a language

All students can now enrol in an undergraduate Diploma in Languages alongside their main degree program. This diploma will enhance proficiency in another language or languages, and will increase international career opportunities. Subject to course availability, this additional program will generally add an extra year to studies, and students will graduate with a Diploma in Languages as well as their other degree. Please note that all language courses are held on campus (face to face) at Callaghan.

Back to topAdmission Requirements

Admission to this program is available to Australian students, residents and international students. Please visit http://www.newcastle.edu.au/what-can-i-study/undergraduate-programs/how-to-get-in/ for information on how to gain entry.

You may also be eligible to receive bonus points if you will be receiving an Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR). Please visit

http://www.newcastle.edu.au/what-can-i-study/undergraduate-programs/how-to-get-in/domestic-students/options-for-entry/bonus-points.html to see if you may be eligible.

Back to topRecommended Studies

HSC level Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics (2 unit) or equivalent.

If you have no previous knowledge of biology, chemistry, or mathematics you are advised to enrol in the bridging courses offered by the English Language and Foundation Studies Centre in January-February and in June-July.

For more information, see: http://www.newcastle.edu.au/students/foundation-studies/bridging-courses/

Back to topCredit Transfer

If you wish to apply for credit for studies completed at another institution or if you are changing programs within the University and wish to transfer your credit to the new program go to https://intraweb.newcastle.edu.au/catso/pages/credittransferhome.aspx to apply online.

Back to topHonours

An Honours year is available to students as a separate program in the form of an additional year to those who meet the entry requirements.

Back to topPractical Experience

Students will have the opportunity to undertake EMGT3130, Project Management and Placement, as part of their elective course choices in their final year. This course involves professional placement with an external organisation. Students enter into an association with a co-operating host organisation where they further develop their expertise in management of environmental projects and issues.

EMGT3130, Project Management and Placement will not be available in 2010.

Back to topInternational Students

International students must comply with the University of Newcastle's English language proficiency requirements. All International Students enrolled in the program will be provided with an orientation to familiarise them with the rules, expectations, facilities and services offered by the University. Please visit http://www.newcastle.edu.au/students/international/student-support/ to find out more about the support services available to international students.

Back to topSpecial Needs

Students with disabilities who require reasonable adjustments to undertake their program should contact the Disability Support Service before semester or early in the semester. Some adjustments need up to 4 weeks lead time to organise, so it is imperative that early contact is made. The Disability Support Service and relevant Faculty and School officers will work together to ensure reasonably adjustments are provided in a timely manner.

Please note: All students must fulfil the inherent requirements of the programs and courses they are undertaking. While reasonable adjustments can be made, these adjustments cannot compromise academic integrity. It is the student's responsibility to check all the requirements of courses, and consider the effects of any medical condition or disability on their ability to complete course requirements. Please visit http://www.newcastle.edu.au/service/disability/ for more information.

Back to topAdditional Information

All students can access additional learning development mechanisms provided by the Centre for Teaching and Learning at http://www.newcastle.edu.au/unit/ctl/lsp/

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students can draw on the assistance and support provided by the Indigenous Student Support and Development service through the Wollotuka Institute.

Back to topRequirements and Structure

Please see Further Information above for your Program Enrolment Checklist, "Are you on track?" form.

The program is completed over 3 years of full-time study (or equivalent part-time) and requires students to pass courses totaling 240 units. Most courses have a value of 10 units.

The program is divided into:

  • Core (compulsory courses);
  • A major (a sequence of study in a related area); and
  • Electives.

The core courses account for half the program and incorporate study in environmental planning and impact assessment, environmental sampling, data analysis, statistics, environmental values and ethics, and biological science.

A major sequence of study is chosen from one of the following;

  • Living Systems (Biodiversity, Conservation & Restoration);
  • Physical Systems (Air, Land & Water) or
  • Social Systems (Sustainability, Policy & Futures).

A major requires the study of a discipline area for 3 years. It is not possible to do a double major in this program.

The elective courses are taken to make up the remaining courses required for the degree. The number of elective courses may vary depending on the major undertaken but will be at least 30 units.

In addition the program must also include:

  • No more than 100 units at 1000 level.
  • At least 60 units at 3000 level.
