An Honours year is available to students as a separate program in the form of an additional year to those who meet the entry requirements.
Back to topPractical Experience (click to hide)
Students will have the opportunity to undertake ENVS3008, Project Management and Placement, as part of their elective course choices in their final year. This course involves professional placement with an external organisation. Students enter into an association with a co-operating host organisation where they further develop their expertise in management of environmental projects and issues.
Back to topInternational Students (click to hide)
International students must comply with the University of Newcastle's English language proficiency requirements. All International Students enrolled in the program will be provided with an orientation to familiarise them with the rules, expectations, facilities and services offered by the University. Back to topSpecial Needs (click to hide)
Students with disabilities who require reasonable adjustments to undertake their program should contact the Disability Support Service before semester or early in the semester. Some adjustments need up to 4 weeks lead time to organise, so it is imperative that early contact is made. The Disability Support Service and relevant Faculty and School officers will work together to ensure reasonably adjustments are provided in a timely manner.
Please note: All students must fulfil the inherent requirements of the programs and courses they are undertaking. While reasonable adjustments can be made, these adjustments cannot compromise academic integrity. It is the student's responsibility to check all the requirements of courses, and consider the effects of any medical condition or disability on their ability to complete course requirements. Please visit http://www.newcastle.edu.au/service/disability/ for more information.

Back to topRequirements and Structure
Please see Further Information above for your Program Enrolment Checklist, "Are you on track?" form.
The program is completed over 3 years of full-time study (or equivalent part-time) and requires students to pass courses totaling 240 units. Most courses have a value of 10 units.
The program is divided into:
- 90 units of core courses;
- 10 units of directed courses, chosen from a list of options at 1000 level;
- 90 units of major courses(a sequence of study in a related area); and
- 50 or 60 units of Electives, depending on the major chosen.
A major sequence of study is chosen from one of the following;
- Earth Systems
- Ecosystems & Biodiversity
- Marine Science
- Sustainability
In the Ecosystems and Biodiversity major, the Marine Science major and the Sustainability major, there is a compulsory course that is also a core course (BIOL1002 or BIOL1050). Students are not required to take BIOL1002 or BIOL1050 twice. The course will count towards both the core and the student's major.
A major requires the study of a discipline area for 3 years. A second major may be taken, depending on the majors chosen. Students who wish to take two majors in the degree must seek enrolment advice from the relevant Program Officer at the commencement of their degree, to establish an enrolment plan which will meet requirements of two majors. There is no guarantee, given course availability and assumed knowledge for given courses, that students can complete the degree with two majors in three calendar years. In a program including a double major, each major must have at least 60 units that are not counted towards the other major.
In addition the program must also include:
- No more than 100 units at 1000 level; and
- At least 60 units at 3000 level.
Students who have successfully completed 2U/3U Maths at HSC may elect any course in place of a MATH course at 1000 level; consult your Program Convenor.
Students are advised to review the relevant pathways documents for further information.
Back to topTransition Arrangements
All current students will be provided with transition arrangements to allow completion of their current program or else may choose to transfer into the revised the Bachelor of Environmental Science and Management from 2011. The courses that have been successfully completed so far will all count towards your degree as long as they met the requirements of the program when you took them. If you are concerned that your studies will not meet the requirements of the revised program, please speak with your Program Officer or your Program Convenor for further advice.
Students who have previously successfully completed MARI3400 or SCIT3000 or SCIT3500 may not enrol in ENVS3400 Advanced Research Project.
