Designed to be a bridge between art and science, the degree program offers you a unique opportunity to visually interpret the Australian environment.

The field of natural history illustration is highly specialised and this program is the only one of its kind in Australia and one of only a few internationally.
Lectures and tutorials are aimed at familiarising students with aspects of field observation, data collection and traditional, as well as multimedia studio, techniques and their application to professional practice. Students are encouraged to select associated elective courses from the design, fine arts and science disciplines. The undergraduate experience will promote the development of individual learning outcomes relevant to the specific interests and vocational needs of students.

Natural History Illustrators are usually employed in the publishing, display, education or exhibition fields. Illustrators may be employed or work freelance in scientific institutions, the publishing industry, educational institutions, libraries, galleries, museums, at archaeological or fossil sites, botanic gardens or for anthropologists, scientists and taxonomists.

In third year, students will undertake a major project in an area of interest. Students can choose to undertake projects with external organisations such as the Australian Museum, Australian Reptile Park, Royal Botanic Gardens and the Wetlands Centre.

A feature of this program is the use of block teaching. Within the structure of the semester, individual courses are divided into two teaching blocks.
Please note: No more that 100 units in total at 1000 level will be counted towards the award.
Please note that most 2000 and 3000 level courses require previous studies in specific courses.

The Bachelor of Natural History Illustration program is offered by the Faculty of Science and Information Technology and is completed over three years of full-time study (or equivalent part-time).
Natural History Illustration is a communication vehicle which lends itself to both conceptual and commercial applications by visually interpreting the natural world. The Bachelor of Natural History Illustration program is the only program of its kind in Australia and is designed to be a bridge between art and science. This art form is used to clarify information and by the application of research methodology it can be applied to areas such as landscape design, anthropology, taxonomy, palaeontology, botany, horticulture, anatomy, fabric design, ecology, environmental philosophy and education.
To complete the program students must pass courses totalling 240 units comprising:
- 160 units of Core (compulsory) Courses;
- 60 units of Directed courses (chosen from a list of approved courses); and
- 20 units of Electives courses (chosen from any unrestricted offerings at the University) found by searching other program outlines in the Handbook (e.g., Bachelor of Science program).
In addition:
- No more than 100 units can be taken at 1000 level, and
- At least 60 units of core and directed courses must be taken at 3000 level.

For students who commenced their enrolment in the program prior to Semester 1, 2012 the following transition arrangements will apply:
- Students who have successfully completed BIOL2070, EMGT2040, EMGT2050 or EMGT3030 will be able to count them as a directed course.
- Students who have not yet successfully completed these courses and wish to do so will be able to enrol in their replacement courses ENVS2004, ENVS2005, ENVS2006 or ENVS3003.
For students who have commenced this program prior to 2010, you are advised to contact your Program Officer or Program Convenor to discuss individual transition arrangements.
