Engineering management - the art and science of planning, organising, allocating resources, directing and controlling activities which have a technical component, is rapidly becoming recognised as a professional discipline. Engineering managers are distinguished from other managers by the fact that they possess both the ability to apply engineering principles, and the skills in which to organise and lead people with technical and non-technical priorities.
The Master of Engineering Management program is designed to:
- Assist in the transition to a softer spectrum of skills by offering courses covering theories and applications of motivational needs, management styles, interpersonal skills, and systems approach;
- Develop leadership and communication potential; and
- Strengthen engineering skills by offering unique and cutting edge engineering courses covering a range of areas of interest including mechanical, civil, chemical, electrical and software engineering.

The Master of Engineering Management program is unique because of its flexible structure which is an intrinsic element of its success, appeal, and international recognition. This statement is made not only on the basis of positive feedback and student enrolments - our program was recently referred to in the highly reputable "Journal of Civil Engineering: The Magazine of The American Society of Civil Engineers" (November 2007, Volume 77, No 11, pp. 54-55). This journal was the forum for the recent discussion in the USA of "The 21-st Century Engineer: A proposal for Engineering Education Reform" and identified our Masters program as an exemplar of good practice and flexible structure. As such it advocated that our Master of Engineering Management be used as a model to direct evolutionary changes in engineering education. We are proud to attract such international acknowledgement and to offer this program to engineers from Australia and internationally.

Engineering in real industrial life is in transition to management. You no longer deal with traditional "nuts and bolts" - you manage people, projects, technology, and/or finance. The Master of Engineering Management program recognises this fact and equips engineers with the managerial component that is needed in this global transition, enhancing your engineering knowledge and specialisation at the same time. This program is relevant to all engineering sections of industry and is of utmost importance to those who plan to work at a managerial level.

Candidates are required to have a Bachelor's degree in an appropriate engineering, science or related discipline from an approved tertiary institution.
For those without a degree, entry will be subject to candidates providing evidence of:
1. A Diploma from an approved institution
2. At least four years work experience at a professional or managerial level OR other approved professional qualifications.

Students who have impaired function in their hands or arms, or a visual impairment may have difficulty pursuing aspects of this program. It is highly advisable for any prospective student with such a disability to contact the Faculty to discuss the issue. The Faculty accepts responsibility, in liaison with the student Support Unit, for providing reasonable accommodations to allow students with disabilities to complete the program.

The Master of Engineering Management requires the completion of 80 units, which may be completed in one year of full-time study or part-time equivalent.
The Master of Engineering Management program is structured around a core curriculum and two groups of directed courses.
Core Courses: Three (3) core courses;
Group A: Management courses; and
Group B: Engineering courses.
Students need to complete the following in order to complete their award:
- 30 units of core courses;
- 10 units from Group A Directed Courses;
- 10 units from Group B Directed Courses;
- 30 units of Directed Courses which may be selected from Group A or Group B directed courses. In addition, after consultation with the Program Convenor, students may also choose from any non-restricted Postgraduate Business courses offered through the Newcastle Business School (which would count as Group A courses). These courses add a degree of flexibility and cater for the possible special interests and needs of prospective students.

The Master of Engineering Management program is distinguished by its flexibility.
The program can be tailored according to individual student needs, based on elements such as their background, personal interest or organisational requirements for career progression.
Courses may be selected from the list of approved courses offered by the Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment (offered in either Semester 1 or 2) and the Newcastle Business School (offered in Trimester 1, 2 or 3). A number of courses may also be studied online through GraduateSchool.com. International students who are residents in Australia and who wish to complete studies online should contact the Program Convenor for advice.
Please Note: Not all courses are available in each semester or trimester.

A program revision was implemented for 2012, and some courses were removed from the program and replaced with new courses. Continuing students who have successfully completed GSBS6020 must not enrol in GSBS6004. Continuing students who have not yet successfully completed GSBS6020 must take new core course GSBS6004. For course replacement information, students must make note of details contained under ‘Transitional Arrangements’ in Course Handbooks. Continuing students affected by the program revision or who are experiencing transition problems are advised to consult with the relevant Program Officer.
