This program provides students with an opportunity to undertake concurrent study in mechanical engineering and business whilst completing two awards. In general, a combined degree program offers greater breadth of learning, enhancing the academic and professional qualities gained in each separage degree. At the same time, it recognises the increasing need for students to graduate with multidisciplinary skills.

This program offers a sound introduction to the fundamental principles of engineering science and practice as well as systems while the business component involves selecting a major sequence from either international business, industrial relations/human resource management, management or marketing. Students will also have the opportunity to undertake an industrially related project in their final year of study in the engineering degree and must also complete 12 weeks of industrial experience throughout the program.

Combined degrees provide the student the opportunity to gain the skills associated with the two single degree programs that form the combined degree. In the Engineering/Business combination, the students are expected to graduate with the skills common to all of our engineering graduates. Typically these are the skills required to analyse and design solutions for a diverse range of engineering problems often by building new knowledge on the foundations provided throughout the degree. Within our engineering program, topics include advanced materials, bulk solids handling, thermofluids, design, and engineering management. Additionally a range of management topics that form the management major within the Business degree program are studies. These courses include economics, marketing, policy development and management based courses.

Students considering this combined degree should do so from a desire of moving towards and engineering management position at an earlier stage of their professional career.

Employment prospects for our combiend degree graduates are excellent with opportunities in either mechanical engineering or business or a combination of both.

Employment can be in consultancy practice, private industry, or government agencies dealing with defence, transport, or power generation or in business fields of management, industrial relations, marketing, tourism and hospitality management, foreign economic relations, international trade, international marketing and investments.

Employment in industry is mostly in large and medium-sized organisaitons. Wide professional recognition ensures that graduates can gain employment in many overseas countries.

There are no prerequisite courses but it is assumed that students will have studied Mathematics (Band 5) or HSC Mathematics Extension 1 (Band E1 or above) or equivalent. Study of one science-related subject would also be an advantage. Applicants who have achieved less that Mathematics Band 5 or have not completed a science related subject may be admitted to the program but may need additional study and/or assistance to successfully complete the requirements of the program.

The B Engineering (Mechanical)component of this combined degree program uses the WAM as a measure for determining honours, and shall grade on the WAM equivalent to the following grades (in accordance with the Embedded Honours Models Structures Policy - 000743):

A minimum WAM of 77 and a minimum mark of 75 in the research courses (at least 30 units) for Honours Class 1; a minimum WAM of 72 and a minimum mark of 65 in the research courses (at least 30 units) for Honours Class II, Division 1; a minimum WAM of 67 and a minimum mark of 65 in the research courses (at least 30 units) for Honours Class II, Division 2;

Performance is based on a three year WAM where 2000, 3000 and 4000 level courses are weighted by 2, 3 and 4 respectively.

A Bachelor of Business (Honours) is available as an additional year to meritorious students. Please contact the Program Convenor or Student Hub for further information.

The mechanical engineering and business combined program comprises a minimum of 430 units completed over five years of study and is available at Callaghan Campus. In this program, students have the opportunity to select electives according to their individual areas of interest.

To meet the requirements for the Bachelor of Business component of the degree, students must complete a minimum of 160 units of courses, that comprise: all Core Courses, and a major sequence prescribed for the degree. There are five major sequences available: eBusiness, International Business, Industrial Relations/Human Resource Management, Management and Marketing. A major sequence of study consists of at least 30 units at 2000 level and 40 units at 3000 level in a prescribed course area. For details of courses refer to the Approved Courses in the Bachelor of Business entry.

Note that it may not be possible to cmplete the combined degree program within five years, if selection of electives involves timetable clashes, or where elective courses are not offered in a particular year.Students enrolled in a combined degree program are advised to consult the relevant Program Convenor regarding their academic program.
