This program provides students with an opportunity to undertake concurrent study in two areas of engineering and complete two awards. In general, this combined degree program offers greater breadth of learning, enhancing the academic and professional qualities gained in each separate degree. At the same time, it recognises the increasing need for students to graduate with multidisciplinary skills.

Students develop skills in the design and building of large scale projects such as roads, bridges, airports, major buildings and water supply systems whilst also gaining skills to assess and model the potential damage and long-term environmental problems resulting from human activity and, importantly, devise environmentally sustainable and economic solutions.

Not surprisingly, graduates from this combined degree enjoy excellent career prospects as they are involved in so many facets of everyday life and its associated infrastructure. Employment may be in consultancy practice, private industry, or government bodies both locally and overseas.

Career opportunities open to gradutes of this degree are similar to those of civil engineers in major engineering construction works, however graduates particularly find work where projects are environmentally sensitive and may work as consultants and assessors in the early stages of the project.

There are no prerequisite courses but it is assumed that students will have studied Mathematics (Band 5) or HSC Mathematics Extension 1 (Band E1 or above) or equivalent. Study of one science-related subject would also be an advantage. Applicants who have achieved less than Mathematics Band 5 or have not completed a science related subject may be admitted to the program but may need additional study and/or assistance to successfully complete the requirements of the program.

This B Engineering combined degree program uses the WAM as a measure for determining honours, and shall grade on the WAM equivalent to the following grades (in accordance with the Embedded Honours Models Structures Policy - 000743):

A minimum WAM of 77 and a minimum mark of 75 in the research courses (at least 30 units) for Honours Class 1; a minimum WAM of 72 and a minimum mark of 65 in the research courses (at least 30 units) for Honours Class II, Division 1; a minimum WAM of 67 and a minimum mark of 65 in the research courses (at least 30 units) for Honours Class II, Division 2.

Performance is based on a three year WAM where 2000, 3000 and 4000 level courses are weighted by 2, 3 and 4 respectively.

Students have the opportunity to undertake an industry-related project in their final year of study and must also complete 12 weeks of industrial experience throughout the program. The combined civil and environmental engineering program comprises 400 units and is available at Callaghan Campus. To meet the current requirements of the combined degree, students must complete the program of study as set out.

Note that it may not be possible to complete the combined degree program within five years, if selection of electives involves timetable clashes, or where elective courses are not offered in a particular year. Students enrolled in a combined degree program are advised to consult the Program Convenor regarding their academic program.
