Bachelor of Medical Radiation Science (Radiation Therapy)

Radiation Therapy is one of the main treatment options for patients diagnosed with cancer. Radiation therapists are the health care professionals who use anatomical and functional imaging studies to design courses of treatment for patients with malignant disease, and use a range of advanced technology to implement daily treatment. Radiation Therapists have a large responsibility to monitor patients health and well being during treatment. Radiation Therapy contributes significantly to the high cancer cure rates in Australia.

Students have access to the latest technologies in radiation therapy on campus and learn essential professional skills prior to professional placement. Students will also attend cancer care facilities and be mentored by qualified radiation therapy tutors.

The program involves the learning of professional radiation therapy knowledge and skills underpinned by the relevant biomedical and behavioural sciences. Clinical experience is undertaken in a variety of cancer care settings, including large metropolitan and rural public and private practices in the Hunter region, NSW, Australia.

Graduates of the program are highly regarded and enjoy a high rate of employment. Australian graduate qualifications are recognised around the world. Graduates are mainly employed in public and private medical facilities. MRS professionals assume clinical roles from graduate practitioners through to experts and specialists. They assume upper level management roles such as Chiefs or Directors of MRS services in both the public and private sectors. MRS professionals also assume roles within higher education and industry, and undertake research. Seniority depends on years of service, and the specialist skills, further education and knowledge of individuals.

Bachelor of Health Science (Honours) is available to students who achieve the required grade-point average.

Students will be placed within the Hunter and in locations across NSW, other states of Australia.

Australia is recognised as a world leader in Medical Radiation Science (MRS) education and practice. Our program is accredited by the Australian Institute of Radiography. A professional year is required after you graduate from university and after satisfying professional accreditation, you can practice across the world.

Radiation Therapists are required to provide a safe environment for patients, staff and themselves. They are required to be able to lift and support the movement of equipment and patients, and move freely and quickly around departments and hospitals. The profession can be physically challenging. All applicants need to be able to complete all parts of the clinical placement program to both complete the course and become accredited with the profession.

There are approximately 25 weeks (1000 hours) of professional placement within the program.
