Back to topWhy study with us? (click to hide)

The School of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Newcastle offers a wide range of training in the laboratory, ranging from the integrated human and animal, to bench and molecular projects. The Honours year is your opportunity to make creative use of the information you have acquired during your first 3 years of study. It should be an exciting, fulfilling experience for those with imagination, drive and an aptitude for problem solving. The Honours year will provide a logical point of entry into a research career via access to a PhD or a Masters program. Even if you ultimately discover that a career in research is not for you, an Honours degree will provide you with fundamental skills that are valued in the workplace and enhance your chances of finding a job.

Back to topCareer Opportunities (click to hide)

With increased competition in gaining employment students who graduate with honours have a distinct advantage. Many find employment in biomedical research, pathology, veterinary science or hospital laboratories. They may also work in the pathology, veterinary, biotechnology or pharmaceutical industries, or in government or industry laboratories. Administrative careers requiring biomedical sciences knowledge are also open.

All students can now enrol in an undergraduate Diploma in Languages alongside their main degree program. This diploma will enhance proficiency in another language or languages, and will increase international career opportunities. Subject to course availability, this additional program will generally add an extra year to studies, and students will graduate with a Diploma in Languages as well as their other degree. Please note that all language courses are held on campus (face to face) at Callaghan.
