Students who perform well during the Bachelor of Nursing degree may undertake a further year of full-time (or equivalent part-time) study to obtain an Honours degree. The Honours degree is designed to develop students' knowledge and skill in research and theory development, and involves a research project in a selected field of nursing. It is intended for registered nurses who wish to prepare themselves for higher degree studies and for leadership in nursing practice, research and education.

Students who enrol in the honours program in the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Newcastle University have the unique opportunity to work alongside and learn from research active academics and clinicians. The program is designed to maximise the students' research potential in the clinical field as they work with researchers on large projects while developing their own work.

Employment opportunities for nurses are excellent. Graduates may be employed in public or private sector health-care system, including hospitals, clinics, industry, nursing homes, community health-care agencies, private homes and local communities. Honours graduates may also follow a career in nursing administration, research or education.
The range of work areas include general nursing, medical/surgical, psychiatric/mental health, developmental disability, community health, rehabilitation, occupational health and safety, paediatrics, accident and emergency, women's health, operating theatres, aged care, palliative care and many others.

Back to topRequirements and Structure
The Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) is a one year full time or 18 months part-time program designed to develop students' knowledge and skills in research and theory development, and to assist them to undertake a research project in a selected field of nursing. Students are appointed a research supervisor. They meet with their supervisor fortnightly at the start of their program. Meetings with their supervisor will become less frequent as the program progresses. The program also includes one or two face-to-face courses depending on enrolment.
