This program is only available to students who have already commenced the Bachelor of Economics program.
Students who perform well during the Bachelor of Economics degree may undertake a further year of full-time (or equivalent part-time) study to obtain an Honours degree (80 units). Successful completion of the Bachelor of Economics (Honours) enables students to access more interesting and challenging jobs and also the possibilities of undertaking a Research Higher Degree.

Career choices include private sector positions in finance, investment and securities analysis, and in policy analysis and development. Within the public sector, job opportunities are available in a range of federal (and state) departments including Treasury and Employment and Workplace Relations, as well as the Reserve Bank and APRA.

Back to topRequirements and Structure
Students completing the Honours program in Economics must complete Economics IVA, IVB, IVC, IVD. Requirement within these courses include:
(a) Completion of five topics including Macroeconomic Analysis, Microeconomic Analysis and Research Methodology which are compulsory topics,
(b) Completion of a 12,500 word supervised Research Essay on a topic of the student's choice,
(c) Attendance at weekly Research Workshops and the making of two presentations during the year regarding Research Essay progress.
The following topics are generally offered, subject to staff availability:
- Macroeconomic Analysis (an advanced course in principles)
- Microeconomic Analysis (an advanced course in principles)
- History of Economic Thought, Labour Economics
- Econometric Modelling
- Issues in Developing Economics
- Economics Planning and Project Evaluation
- Applied Policy Analysis
- Special Topic A (content varies depending on staff availability)
- Special Topic B (content varies depending on staff availability)
Students may complete one undergraduate course as part of their five topic requirement, if it is not possible to select five 4000-level topics from among those listed above.
All Students must have completed ECON3450 Econometric Modelling or equivalent prior to entry into the Honours Program. It is highly recommended that honours students take ECON3450 Econometric Modelling as the elective as part of the honours program if they have not already completed this course during their undergraduate program.
